valancy1 Posted October 23, 2008 #26 Share Posted October 23, 2008 I know what you mean about spelling (I've become to dependant of spell check) I haven't seen or heard of Akeelah and the Bee. When did it come out? A couple years ago, I think. Laurence Fishburn(e?) and Angela Bassett starred along with that funny-looking guy from Moonlighting (not Bruce Willis). It's such a great story. djmcwilliams106 Posted October 23, 2008 #28 Share Posted October 23, 2008 In 10 days I sail on the Valor (11/2) with my husband (newbie) and 2 nieces and nephew (all newbies) (trip for kids to help them as their parents (my brother) divorced this year hoping to give them some happy time) and my mom. My mom & I have sailed before but the rest of the gang has not. I can't wait to see all of their faces and to experience the trip through their eyes. Hearing your story about your borther just gives me more anticipation.
mcfam5 Posted October 23, 2008 #29 Share Posted October 23, 2008 For my brother and his girlfriend. They are about to embark on the Carnival Fascination this morn. It's their very first cruise. They have been calling me with updates. I got a call a little while ago. When I answered they were yelling " I see the boat!!!" I told them I was happy for them and then explained that they see a ship :D They are going to call me when they step on the ship for the first time. I'm so excited for them, just had to share with someone. We are taking my parents, my sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew on their first cruise for Thanksgiving. I am so looking forward to their reaction!

Browneyes43 Posted October 24, 2008 #32 Share Posted October 24, 2008 My first cruise was on the Fascination. I can VIVIDLY remember stepping onto the ship right into the atrium. It was the Thanksgiving holiday but the ship was all done up for Christmas. I fell head over heels in love with cruising right then and there! I'm excited for your brother and his girlfiend. I'm taking my daughters (newbies) in 39 days (my youngest will turn 20 on our last night) on the Destiny. I hope they enjoy it half as much as I did. obx_fintoo Posted October 24, 2008 #38 Share Posted October 24, 2008 OP, I can certainly understand your excitement. I'm sure it will be torture for you to not hear from them until they get back. Maybe they'll get a phone card in Nassau and give you an update. And be sure to have them join the boards and post a review when they get back! How fun! To everyone that is about to take a newbie (especially kids) make sure to have someone ready with a camera to their first glimpse of the ship on film. We surprised our DD (who was 4 at the time) with a cruise in January. It was her 2nd cruise, but she had no clue where we were going for vacation. I have the best close up of her smile and amazement when she realized where we were headed! :)
mrsfuzzmo Posted October 24, 2008 #39 Share Posted October 24, 2008 We are going with two other couples. We've cruised 13 or 14 times and one couple went on Carnival Freedom for their first cruise last year. The other couple has never cruised. I can't wait to take them and show them the ropes. I can guarantee they will be hooked!! We love the feeling of getting onboard a ship and exploring. That's one of the reasons that we never sail the same ship twice! It's all in the adventure of "something new". Now if they'd only grow a few more Caribbean Islands to explore. I think we've been to almost everyone of them, some of them like Cozumel and Cayman 6 times! But that's OK!! To the OP...let us know all about the proposal and how it went! Can't wait to hear about their adventures.!
Desiree D Posted October 24, 2008 #40 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Our first was the Fascination, May 1996, with our 3 kids, my mom and my brother. Didn't know about Cruise Critics, I actually preferred to be surprised by it all. What a great memory. We actually boarded lower ship, not atrium- for some unknown reason, in San Juan. This is fun, we will be on board our second Carnival ship (5th cruise) in less than 10 days. I'm STILL so excited, more than our first cruise even. The Fascination was a WONDERFUL cruise experience for all of us, and I know the Conquest will be too! I'm so excited, fun to see this excitement through "new" eyes today, as I can hardly wait for our next Carnival cruise....
sp29488 Posted October 29, 2008 Author #41 Share Posted October 29, 2008 They are back and had the best time. They just loved everything about the cruise. My brother told me when he got home that he wanted to go on a cruise with my dh and me. They now want to go on a 7 day cruise they loved it so much. I asked did they know that there was a group on their ship from a radio station and he never even knew that they were on the ship. I mean when I told him about it he said "what group?" He proposed to his girlfriend on their formal night. After they ate, he took her up on one of the open decks, under the stars and they were looking out at the lights of other ships, etc. and he proposed. He said that she cried. (ahhh) She's now sporting a beautiful heart shape diamond. They took the ferry to Atlantis in Nassau and walked around, shopped, casino and then took a taxi back to the ship and walked around the stores there and the straw market. They got back on the ship and relaxed in the hot tub ( I think it was this day) and went down the slide. In Freeport they did the dolphin encounter. They said when they got off the ship it was raining and other excursions were getting canceled but theirs wasn't. They decided to go ahead with the dolphin excursion (said they were going to get wet anyway) and when they got out to where the dolphins were, it stopped raining and they had a wonderful time. (Love the pictures). I'm so glad that they went with the frame of mind to have a good time. They loved the food, entertainment, etc. Just wanted to come back and give info. on how great of a time they had. I'm looking forward to our 7th cruise with Carnival on this same ship in May of next year. My dh and I believe a vacation, land or cruise, is what you make of it and if we are together, everything else will be great. Thanks for reading and feeling the excitment with me. obx_fintoo Posted October 29, 2008 #42 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Thanks for the update! :) I'm glad his proposal went well and they had such a great time. It has been interesting to read the many varied reviews of this cruise! Just 3 more weeks until we see the Fascination and judge first hand! :D
NCTribeFan Posted October 29, 2008 #43 Share Posted October 29, 2008 I'm so glad they had a good time. On my way to work Monday morning, they were interviewing one of the band members. Pretty much, all they talked about was how no one involved with this group had been sober for over three days. :o I guess there was a time in my life when I thought something like that was "fun" but those brain cells died many years ago. ;) We've been getting very mixed reports about Fascination here lately. As usual, I won't read too much into any of them as we can have vastly different experiences from people who are even on the same cruise. Congratulations to the happy couple!
