CASPALL Posted October 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2008 Overnighting in Madeira on our upcoming Aurora cruise and wondering if anyone can recommend a good place to eat for an evening meal. Last time we were there we didn't find anything particularly good. Thanks
CASPALL Posted October 25, 2008 Author #2 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Hmmm! Do most people try to get their money's worth and eat on the ship when in port?
thames_side Posted October 27, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 27, 2008 Sorry you are not getting much help. The best place for restaurants in Madeira is the old town area, can't remember any specific names though. I'll see if I can dig anything out from old cruise and holiday souvenirs. tom_uk Posted October 28, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2008 We were in Madeira very early in October for an overnight stay, and we took the opportunity to have a meal in East, Ventura's 'asian fusion' restaurant - it was practically deserted! We went ashore afterwards and walked around the sea-front, and didn't see anywhere that looked very attractive. There was a yacht club (?) at road-level that was certainly busy, but how good it was I don't know. We didn't get into the older parts of Funchal at all, I'm afraid. We found a street cafe/bar after a while and had a pleasant glass of red wine, however.
thames_side Posted October 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 28, 2008 You should find something along Rua Dom Carlos in the Old Town. We went to a place called O Tapassol a few years ago. It was quite good then, not expensive and plenty of atmosphere. Or in the middle of town on Avenida Arriaga there is quite a good place called Golden Gate - a bit more international - good if you can get a table on the balcony. If you want to spend a bit more money we liked Cas Velha - in the opposite direction, on the west side of town in Rua Imperatriz D Amelia. Hope this helps but we might be a bit out of date. Enjoy Funchal it is one of our favourite places. Cadogan do a good guide book. Doug

ljd48 Posted October 28, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 28, 2008 We found a lovely restaurant called 'Patio' on the Rua da Carreira, the street behind the Avenue Arriaga. They have traditional portugese Fado singers some evenings and they serve the best fish dishes I've ever tasted.
thames_side Posted November 18, 2008 #8 Share Posted November 18, 2008 Hi Saturn Star. You make no comment on the other restaurants mentioned on this thread: Patio, O Tapassol, Casa Velha, Golden Gate, East. As a local you must know them well, are they any good in your view? Are they still there?
