Need special license to rent a car in some RCCL ports?

Read somewhere that some (all?) Southern Carib ports require some special license to rent a car? IOW, you just can't go up to the rental counter, pay, and then drive away? We will be in San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Antigua, St. Lucia & Barbados. Was planning on renting a car most days. Which islands require this 'special license'? thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if it's the same in the US as Canada but when we are going international (except the States) we just go to CAA pay $10 and get an international driver's licence. It's good for either 3 or 6 months, I forget which.

We have rented cars in San Juan, St. Thomas, St. John and St Martin; Never needed any "special license". We usaully rented from chain stores so we would have a guaranteed car and didn't have to rush to get one at the counter - we like to sleep in.

Also, check with you insurance provider and your credit card, you may be able to skip the rental insurance.

I rented cars in the past on Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, St. Kitts, Grand Cayman & Barbados and recall having to get a temperary local license . If you notice the pattern all are currently or were British colonies. It was issued by the car rental people usually, cost $10 to $20US and was good from 30 days to one year. You also had to have and show a current license from your home country. Just inquire when you make your reservation.

In Peurto Rica and St. Maarten/Martin only your home country license or an international one was required.
