celebrityprincess Posted November 6, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2008 I thought I read somewhere that there was an optional formal night on NCL ships. Is that true? Is there an optional formal night? Thanks!
snorklinbarb Posted November 6, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 6, 2008 It's no longer called that. Now they have "Dress up or not" night, generally the first day at sea. Just off the Dawn and they also had a second night later in the week where people dressed up some. Totally up to you. You can dress up every night if you'd like or go resort casual any night. On our recent cruise, all 3 men at our table had on jackets & ties and the women wore something special. We saw quite a few dressed up, but no tuxes at all. Freestyle....up to you.:)
celebrityprincess Posted November 6, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted November 6, 2008 Thanks for the info. Freestyle cruising is new to me so I'll probably have more questions as I get ready for my first NCL cruise.:p
snorklinbarb Posted November 6, 2008 #4 Share Posted November 6, 2008 Welcome to CC and to the NCL boards. A lot of good info here. You're doing exactly the right thing. Too many people go into freestyle without any research at all, then get disappointed and frustrated because it's not exactly what they expected. So ask away....we're here to help.:D Have you joined your roll call yet? That's a fun way to meet people on the cruise, pick up tips and info, etc. Good luck! garycarla Posted November 6, 2008 #5 Share Posted November 6, 2008 Welcome to NCL and freestyle. Dress up if you want is well put. Part of the reason we love NCL is I do not need to wear a choking device, often called a tie. At the risk of causing an uproar, I don't like that some think it means cut offs and t-shirts or even muscle shirts are okay. Please don't slam me.. just sharing my two cents. I will still sail NCL anyways. See more about cruising with NCL here

See more about cruising with NCL here I took some heat awhile back for suggesting that Cunard should rethink its conception that casual just means you don't have to wear a tie, but you still should bring a sport jacket at minimum. While I think its your vacation and you are paying the bills so you should wear whatever you want, I think you should respect your fellow guests and probably not wear backward baseball caps and muscle shirts to a dinner that is being served by someone wearing a tux. But that's just me. Technically you can wear whatever you want to a funeral too, but out of respect, we don't.
celebrityprincess Posted November 6, 2008 Author #7 Share Posted November 6, 2008 I agree wholeheartedly. I'm actually glad that they have the optional formal night. Cruising is the only opportunity that I have to really dress up and I enjoy it. My whole family (about 16 of us) will be cruising next summer. One of my nieces was very disappointed that NCL doesn't have formal nights. She'll be very happy to hear that she can still dress up! Thanks again for all the info!
