Optional formal night?

I thought I read somewhere that there was an optional formal night on NCL ships. Is that true? Is there an optional formal night? Thanks!

It's no longer called that. Now they have "Dress up or not" night, generally the first day at sea. Just off the Dawn and they also had a second night later in the week where people dressed up some.

 

Totally up to you. You can dress up every night if you'd like or go resort casual any night.

 

On our recent cruise, all 3 men at our table had on jackets & ties and the women wore something special. We saw quite a few dressed up, but no tuxes at all.

 

Freestyle....up to you.:)

You're doing exactly the right thing. Too many people go into freestyle without any research at all, then get disappointed and frustrated because it's not exactly what they expected.

At the risk of causing an uproar, I don't like that some think it means cut offs and t-shirts or even muscle shirts are okay. Please don't slam me.. just sharing my two cents. I will still sail NCL anyways.

I took some heat awhile back for suggesting that Cunard should rethink its conception that casual just means you don't have to wear a tie, but you still should bring a sport jacket at minimum.

 

While I think its your vacation and you are paying the bills so you should wear whatever you want, I think you should respect your fellow guests and probably not wear backward baseball caps and muscle shirts to a dinner that is being served by someone wearing a tux. But that's just me. Technically you can wear whatever you want to a funeral too, but out of respect, we don't.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm actually glad that they have the optional formal night. Cruising is the only opportunity that I have to really dress up and I enjoy it. My whole family (about 16 of us) will be cruising next summer. One of my nieces was very disappointed that NCL doesn't have formal nights. She'll be very happy to hear that she can still dress up!
