cattolica Posted November 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2008 Are there any rental car agencies close to the pier in Hilo, or is renting from the airport our only choice? Thanks
Rare karatemom2 Posted November 19, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 19, 2008 I don't believe there are any right at the pier. They all seem to be at the airport. But they all offer free shuttle service from the pier to the airport which is only about 10 minutes away. We found it very easy renting from Budget. The shuttle was right there when we exited the port and we were at the airport quickly and had our car in no time at all. The entire process took about 30 minutes total. kapoho2 Posted November 19, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 19, 2008 You can see the ship at the pier from the airport in Hilo!! It is a very short ride in the shuttle from the pier to the rental car booths at the airport. Hilo is not a typical airport with traffic and congestion. It is a lazy little place....all open air....and the rental car booths are all in a row just across from the airport building. The cars are kept right behind the booths. cattolica Posted November 19, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted November 19, 2008 Thanks for taking the time to reply. It sounds pretty simple, so we won't stress over it.
Nancyquilts Posted November 19, 2008 #5 Share Posted November 19, 2008 Hilo is one of the easiest places. And you dock at a long pier with vendors inside. The flowers are lovely - we pick up a $10 arrangement for the cabin and it lasts the rest of the cruise. Nancy
beachchick Posted November 19, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 19, 2008 As an FYI (if you should need to know), you'll find the same situation in Kahului and Nawiliwili (Lihue airport) as well. The airport locations are the closest (and usually only) rental car locations. There are no rental cars or rental locations actually at any of the piers. It's not possible or practical in terms of space, time, personnel, logistics, and most importantly, security. There's no possible way it could work when, for example, there are 400 to 500 pax with car rental reservations. The last person in line would likely wait for hours just to rent the car. beachchick
