Island Annie Posted November 6, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2004 Can anyone recommend a good restaurant for ceviche? Will I find this delicacy in Costa Maya? Or will I need to venture into Mahahual? A BIG "thank you" to anyone who can help. Island Annie
bruce-r Posted November 7, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 7, 2004 We had some really good conch and shrimp ceviche from the restaurant right in front of "Hotel Mahahual". I liked it a lot and my son is still taking about it 7 months later. This is the restaurant: Larger image I know it doesn't look like much of a restaurant, but the food was delicious. nitrogenaddict Posted November 8, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2004 For my money and I live here the best ceviche is at Oxtankha right in the centre of town. Tell them Douglas recommended it. I take all my customers there. They have conch, conch and shrimp or conch, shrimp & octopus depending on the availability. Ask for TIO and he will make sure you get some of the best ceviche I have tasted.
Island Annie Posted November 8, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted November 8, 2004 Thanks Nitro & Bruce R. Are these places easy to find? Or can you tell me where to find Hotel Mahahual, and Oxtankha? Do either of them have a website? Thanks again for your help. I'm REALLY looking forward to visiting Mahahual:-) Annie

bruce-r Posted November 9, 2004 #6 Share Posted November 9, 2004 The restaurant we ate at was just in front of Hotel Mahahual. I didn't get to eat at the restaurant that Nitro is recommending, but I think it is this one: His recommendation is definitely more informed than mine, but I still think the ceviche we had was quite fine indeed. I'd like the chance to return and try them both. Both places were pretty close to where the taxis drop you off. They will both be easy to find by walking along the main "street" Larger copies of those photos are Here.
nitrogenaddict Posted November 9, 2004 #7 Share Posted November 9, 2004 Both places do excellent Ceviche.. I just happen to prefer the ceviche mixed which comes with conch, shrimp and octopus. But like everyone else it depends on your palette.

Bruce R: Thanks for the pics.At least now I know what I'm looking for. Nitro: Have any local pics to share?
AlwaysReady2Go Posted November 25, 2004 #9 Share Posted November 25, 2004 Would anyone like to enlighten this ignorant tourist as to what ceviche is? I will be visiting in Feb. and have an open mind for local food - thank you (Nitro I have been reading your posts and you have supplied lots of great information and I thank you!) nitrogenaddict Posted November 25, 2004 #10 Share Posted November 25, 2004 Ceviches is traditionally raw conch chopped into small pieces. It is then marinated with lime juice, onions, tomatoes alittle pepper, and cilantro. After 20 minutes of soaking in the marinade the Ceviche is ready to eat. It is then served up with toasted triangles of tortillas and some chilli. They also add shrimp to this or octopus.

Not at all "squishey" like raw fish and not rubbery like clams can be. 23 more days and I'm in Cozumel. Ceviche is definitely on my list.
