Taxis in George Town

Anyone know the best place to catch a cab at the port? On a previous visit I followed the signs for taxi service, but this led to an area with vans that seemed to cater mostly to larger groups. When they found out where I wanted to go (about a mile away), they told me to go out to the street and hail a cab. I don't think they wanted to carry 2 people that short a distance. I ended up walking to my destination without finding an available taxi. Normally I wouldn't mind walking a mile, but we were carrying dive gear, the traffic was steady, and there wasn't a sidewalk in many places, so it wasn't exactly a fun walk. Is there a better place near the port to catch a ride?
