Maui car rental question

We will be arriving for a port day in Lahaina and would like to rent a car for the day. I would like to use Dollar since I have an account with them. It appears that their office is located at the West Maui Arpot in Kapalua.

Does anyone know if there is some kind of shuttle between the port and that airport?

Not sure if they have a shuttle, but it is a bit of a hike from the port to the airport - depending on how much time you have in port, where you want to go etc... Hertz has an office in town which would be about a 10 minute (or less) walk as an alternative.

The West Maui Airport (Kapalua) really isn't all that far. It's maybe 15 minutes (20 at the most, depending on traffic) by shuttle from the tender pier to the "rental row" locations that are a bit south of the airport itself.

Could you be thinking of Kahului (OGG), the primary airport on Maui? If so, that is correct. It's almost an hour's drive one-way from Lahaina; none of the rental companies will send shuttles that far because of time, fuel, personnel, etc. (and who wants to spend that much time just getting to and from the rental location?). Cruisers coming in on ships tendered at Lahaina, must not use the Kahului airport for rental.

For ships at Lahaina, there's the Hertz on Papalaua in Lahaina, as well as Hertz and Enterprise at hotel locations on Ka'anapali beach (10 minutes by shuttle from the tender pier)--and don't be fooled by addresses for the major rental companies that list "Lahaina" because, except the for the Hertz mentioned, they're not actually in Lahaina proper. The West Maui Airport (JHM) locations are just a bit up the coast from Ka'anapali. All the west locations close fairly early, but most do allow after-hours dropoff. I think most west-side locations offer shuttles from the pier, but only during open hours, so you'd have to grab a taxi (or the Lahaina-Ka'anapali shuttle) if you return after about 5 pm.

Thanks very much for the information. It is the West Maui airport, not Kahului. I will take the shuttle service to pick up the car.

We rented from Dollar in October. Called after we got off the ship and the shuttle was at the pickup area in front of the courthouse in 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on how crowded the shuttle is, they may take just the driver. Also when returning the car, they ask that just the driver do it. Had a brand new Sebring convertible (200+ miles). Very satisfied.
