Keeping Food in Car in AK?

We are hoping to buy a lot of our own food in Alaska when we do land touring, to save some money. With all the bears everywhere, however, we are thinking we won't be able to keep the food in the car (i.e., in the trunk). Is that true? Are there issues of bears breaking into cars for food?

Have any of you that have done land touring on your own had much luck with buying your food (bfast and lunch) while on the road and eating out for dinner? We are planning to go to the Anchorage, Denali, and Kenai areas. Not sure how many grocery stores are available in the Denali and Kenai areas.

Don't worry about it. Bears aren't everywhere. I've traveled all over the road system in interior Alaska with food in my car. As long as your not leaving banana peels and open sardine cans on your dash board on a hot day you probably don't have too much to worry about.

Plenty of grocery stores in Anchorage and Kenai area. I'd stock up a little before going up to Denali. Just cause prices there were a bit higher and not much variety to choose from.

Just use a bit of common sense. If you pull into a parking lot and the Park Rangers have a sign up warning about bears in the area then be on alert. Otherwise enjoy your trip.
