Transportation La Romana to Santo Domingo

We will be visiting La Romana on the Grand Princess next month. We would like to travel to Santo Domingo and explore the "Old City". The guide books report it is about a 90 minute trip each way. Is taking a bus an option? What about a taxi and cost? Please advise, Thanks!
