Local Arts and Crafts

Since we have already purhcased every souvenier, one could possibly purchase...we have begun to collect paintings, carvings, and such. We like to support the locals, not China. When we were in Antigua, once bfore, we didn't see anything like that. Where can I find a "non-gallery" setting, with local stuff? Is there a craft market?

I can't answer about the arts and crafts but I can answer about jewelry. My FAVORITE jewelry store in all of the Caribbean is in Antigua. Hans Smit is a wonderful goldsmith. He makes trips around the world and purchases his own stones. He cuts them himself at his shop about 2 blocks from where the ship docks. And, he makes all his own settings. He makes a charm/pendant that is unique to Antigua. It is molded from the Antiguan bread & butter plant pod - it is very pretty and also reasonably priced.

 

I love his work. It is unique, high quality, and a wonderful way to remember your trip to the Caribbean.

 

Sorry that I can't answer about the local paintings, etc but if you drop in his shop, I know that he will direct you to the artwork you're looking for. (His shop is on first street to the right from the ships' dock - go up about a short block and a 1/2 and it's on the right side.)
