Nextel cellphones Use as a walkie talkie?

First, let me state that I don't want any debate on cellphone use on board a cruise ship. If you wish to debate the pros and cons of onboard cellphone use, please go to another thread.

All I want to know is has anyone used their nextel phones as a walkie talkie while on board or in port? I'm talking about the feature on nextel phones that allows you to turn the "phone" part off and just use the two way? (so no phone charges) We will be traveling with my 18 year old daughter and I want an easy way to find her on the ship if I need to.

Techonology not widely used outside of US (if at all). Aside from the PTT functionality being the oddball, Sprint/Nextel "cellular" uses CDMA technology, while most networks outside US are GSM only. Trying going to Mexico with a VZW, Sprint, or Alltel phone. No bueno, sr.
