SATXLady Posted February 9, 2009 #26 Share Posted February 9, 2009 You don't need trip insurance. It's basically pushed on people because it's huge profit center for TA's and travel companies. I only bought it when I went to africa. No need for it on a cruise. Bad, bad, bad advice. I am willing to self-insure the cost of the trip. What I'm not willing to self-insure for is the possibility of needing emergency medical evacuation back to the states. Even healthy young people have medical emergencies when on vacation. I think I decided I would never travel again without it after reading about the 16 year old on a cruise ship who had to have an emergency appendectomy about a year back I think. As an over 50, I don't even want to think of what could go wrong. And depending upon your medical insurance, even if you don't need medical evacuation, your insurance may not cover all medical bills out of the country. Even if medical evacuation is not required, one may not be able to continue their cruise and may be forced to fly back commericial air from whereever. Short notice air fares are notoriously expensive. I do think that purchasing through the TA or cruiseline may not be the best way to go and that there better and less expensive options available. melissa@cruisecritic Posted February 10, 2009 #27 Share Posted February 10, 2009 Hi everyone, We've published a story on what's happening with Prime, and what steps you can/should take if you've suddenly found yourself without insurance: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=3050 We very strongly recommend protecting your cruise vacation investment by purchasing travel insurance. However, not all policies are created equal, and you'll want to do a little research to make sure you are getting the coverage you need -- from a reputable company.
