Vancouver hotel question

Hi there!

I booked a night at the Westin Bayshore for the night before my cruise (SO EXCITED!). I got a great great price and I'm very happy with the location, I think. So my questions. Is the hotel within walking distance to...anything? We get in pretty early in the day - so just interested in seeing a little bit of the city before we turn in. Restaurants? Also, I'm assuming my only option from getting to the hotel to the pier at Canada Place, aside from walking, is via taxi. Is that correct?

Thanks so much for your help!

A great Hotel in a great location....in true Westin style and most people just love. I think that you will find that the hotel will shuttle you to Canada Place otherwise it will be a $12 - $15 cab ride. You are just blocks from the 1000 acre Stanley Park, an easy walk to the fashionable shops of Robson Street and the HOHO Vancouver Trolley stops right at your door. Two restaurants leap to mind, the first would be Carderos, an upscale marine pub on the water over looking the Coal Harbour yacht basin and is very short walk from the Bayshore. The other would be the Fish House in Stanley Park....I would advise a taxi. You will have a great time.:)

There's also The Lift (I think it's called that) right across from the Bayshore on the water. And a bistro just along the seawall, about 1/2 a minute walk. Both are excellent. And the Bayshore also has a good burger-type place for lunch, looking out on the marina.

Thanks for the response! I called the Westin and got a very polite "ummm...no" when I asked about a shuttle to the pier. Their shuttle service runs only between the Westin and the Pacific Centre. But not to the pier. I'm very glad to know the potential cost for a taxi. Can you tell me...will the hotel call for a taxi for me, or will I need to flag one down? Can't ever have too many details! :-)

Thanks so much for the information and URLs as well! Very helpful!

Sure the hotel will call a taxi for you if there is not one waiting in their taxi stand....and I am sure if you spoke to the bell captain something can be negotiated;) for a shuttle to Canada Place....probably not Ballantyne though.

It's a very good hotel, good enough for Howard Hughes for nearly 6 months in 1972. It's a few block walk back down to Canada Place, and downtown Vancouver is compact enough that it would be hard pressed to have a $10 cab ride in the downtown core.

I just read somewhere that you can walk from the Westin Bayshore to the Aquarium - but on the map it looks pretty far. Can anyone confirm that you really can walk? We were thinking about riding the trolly (something like $35CAD) all the way around it and just getting off at the Aquarium, then walking back to the hotel, as it would be too late to jump back on for a ride back to the hotel.

Thanks!

Yes you can walk from the Hotel to the Aquarium - matter of fact one of the begula whales is pregnant and expecting this spring so there might be the added thrill of seeing a baby perform.

It looks like you will be cruising in May so you are too early for the free shuttle - the walk is spectacular - probably 2 - 3 miles but pretty well flat - the other option is to take the #19 trolley bus which you can catch near the Bayshore - it will terminate in the park and you can walk the shorter distance to the Aquarium from there - the bus fare is $2.50 per adult - transfers are good for 90 minutes but you are likely to be there for a longer period of time - this bus runs fairly often so you shouldn't have to long to wait - perhaps walk one way and take the bus the other way.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi Dennis! Actually, we cruise mid-June. The Westin website says 0.1 miles from there to the Aquarium (just found that) - but you're thinking it's more like 2 or 3 miles? Bit of a difference! :-) I just read that the Aquarium is closing early the one night, so we might have to cram it in before we check out the following morning. We'll see - the early closure was a disappointment - but I'll have to make it a priority if there's a baby whale! Amazing!!!

Seems like we are both on line at the same time - it is definately more than 0.1 miles - here's a map of the park - the aquarium is #11 - the bus stop is between #7 and #12

If you look at the map and look near the entrance to the Park you will see two P - the furthest one is the parking lot for the Bayshore.

Hope this might help you further

Cheers

Thanks! Very helpful! And I'm very glad to know before we start a little walking adventure that it's more than a couple of blocks! :-)
