Taking the ship apart while you are trying to enjoy your cruise

WE went through this a year ago, when the Monarch was not ready to go on schedule. It went out, but we where climbing over ladders and construction everywhere. Jade was not even open yet. It was a mess out on the decks.

 

I think all complaints to royal fell on deaf ears. I dont remember anyone getting any compansation. I just know better now. I wont book a month before or after a refurbish. And also give a brand new ship a few weeks to work the kinks out.

I am on your cruise. Don't worry about it Amy! Just enjoy the cruise. After 11 cruises, I don't even notice the workmen painting and varnishing anymore. But they are always doing something! P.S. I am pretty sure I posted on our AOS roll call site that we were on the Enchantment pre-drydock two years ago. On the morning of debarkation, they started working around 6 a.m. (as we had already arrived in Miami) stripping the carpeting from the pool deck, all the deck chairs had been put away to do it, and the Windjammer was closed that last morning. We had to eat breakfast in the regular dining room. Yes - a little inconvenience, but we were getting off in a couple of hours anyway. I don't know if this is the usual routine but we were off that ship faster than any other cruise, because the Enchantment was scheduled to leave Miami at 11 a.m. with only the crew aboard headed for drydock boatyard in the Bahamas. I would be really surprised if the good price had anything to do with it being the last cruise before drydock. (I hope I don't have to eat my words!)

Carpeting is on the pool deck on both sides where you walk from the Windjammer lobby area out to the pool deck.....the parts on both sides that are under the shade from deck 12 are carpeted.

 

Buffalo6593: You are going to have a wonderful cruise the week of May 23rd. It is impossible to have a bad cruise anyway. And, a good friend of mine on the crew is returning to work on May 23rd, along with over 500 other crew members...so you will be guaranteed to have great service and friendly smiling faces.

I agree with there is no such thing as a bad cruise! No matter how much refurbishment they were doing while we were on board we made the BEST of our cruise!!! We had a great cruise despite the removal of important things like the railings of the ship! I just wanted to warn others of this so they would be aware. We will now only book cruises that will not be going or coming out of dry dock to avoid the inconviences that we did experience. Since we were on this exact ship in January and had a Wonderful experience I was just dissappointed that they would ruin it for the first time cruisers. I spoke to many who were dissappointed and explained this was not the "normal" way of things. Anyway......... this is cruise critic and I just wanted to warn those of you who haven't had this type of experience of the possibility of what could be. As I stated before this was our 8th cruise and every cruise we have been on there has been workers painting the ship and fixing things. But removing the railings and eating breakfast with 100 or more workers where the food was almost gone and finding a place to sit to eat was nearly impossible. We also had many RCCL workers not showing up for many events in the compass, now that is a little different that your normal cruise.~~ I like the comment about summer camp. The camp counselors were not aloud to do any "breaking down of the camp" until all campers were gone. That is what I expect from a cruise that I paid full price for. Let me please have the WHOLE ship. Thank you for all of you wonderful inputs. My family will continue cruising but will ask a lot of questions first!! Happy Sailing~~bevi

I had the same impression. We sailed with you on the NE.What concerned me more was the morning of debarkation.They ushered us out of our rooms by 7(did you notice they stripped all the bedspreads off the night before?)and we sat in the lounge areas for hours until they let us off. The public bathrooms stopped flushing!!!Toilets overflowed and I never saw such a discusting sight!The back halls were closed off and they were stripping the casino.You had to walk up/down stairs and over to the other end of the ship to get back to the lounge. Needless to say, we did'nt use a facility until the airport.Did you notice how congenial everyone is when you arrive and how curt they are when you leave? Even the airport service was substandard!

Could it be that RCI is experimenting with the "Barefoot Cruise" experience. For a reduced rate you can actually help in the distruction/construction, learn a new valuable trade as a painter or pipefitter?? Sounds like a real deal to me.

Something similar happened to us on the Ocean Princess's last voyage before being turned over to P&O.

They were trying to unload everything in the giftshops; especially anything that said Ocean Princess. By the last three days of the cruise, the shops were closed and being dismantled.

It was VERY tacky to say the least.

We also think they did not restock the wine before the cruise. It was all running out. Very annoying. But then they dropped the prices on what was left. That was good!

It didn't ruin the cruise by a long shot. But I might think twice before taking a "Final Voyage" again.

We had a similiar experience on a January 1999 14 day Panama Canal Legend of the Seas cruise. RCCL did not inform us or anyone we talked with. It appears RCCL (RCI) does that as standard practice. We put this post in our personal Nordic Empress page. The Nordic Empress is due to become Empress of the Seas sometime this May.

I appreciate everyones input on this subject. I want all those reading this to remember we are not talking about painting and the normal up keep of a ship that goes on during every cruise. We are talking about the REMOVAL of railings of a ship, being replaced with yellow caution tape, staff being at meetings for the NEW ship while we are enjoying the existing ship and eating with a full construction crew on top of the sold out crowd. I want RCCL to make sure NO one that is on a cruise experiences the ship being taken apart and destroyed while a full sold out crowd of FULL PAYING customers on on board. Keeping the ship in good shape is GREAT! Taking it apart and destroying it --IS NOT! Thank you for listening and understanding the warning of a ship going into dry dock. Let the destruction begin after all are OFF the last sailing!! Always planning my next cruise!! Happy Sailling~~ bev

In our case with the Legend of the Seas, we felt a sense of being in a house under construction. Just some of the many problems were:

 

For most of our 14 day cruise:

 

Long rolls of carpet in the stateroom hallways we often had to step over

 

Pieces of carpet or tiles taken up in many of the areas in front of the elevators

 

Dust (constuction dust?) in the air in the stateroom hallways & in front of the elevators

 

Many stateroom doors left wide open the whole time while they were refurbishing the staterooms

 

A number of areas of the ship taped off with yellow tape
