Fascination 1-19-09 recap

Thanks for the review and great pictures, Cinderose! Yes, it was a cold week as we were in Florida, just south of Jacksonville. Still better than the snow and ice. We'll be on the May 11th sailing and can't wait. :D

It was too cold to be on deck on both of our sea days in mid-December, too.

We didn't really do anything in the evenings. After late dining, it was mostly head to the casino, or wander around the shops, or just sit and people-watch for a while.

No shows, no karaoke, no clubs. Still, really enjoyed our cruise and trying to figure out when I can get back to Jax. Even thinking about doing a B2B.

and it was cold! And of course we missed snow at home (we are in central NC and haven't seen a "big" snow in 4-5 years). We got to the port about 10:30 and they began boarding VIP about 11:30 and we were on and eating by 12:00. I also noted that there seemed to be a lot of older people on board compared to our other cruises.

We got off Jan. 19th while you were waiting to get on... We were told in the VIP waiting that a body had to be taken off so it would be a bit before we were allowed to leave. We had put our luggage out and had to wait for all the ones with their luggage. It was fine but it was 10am before allowed to leave. We were herded out and by the time we left the ship to our car was about 5 min. - then the 4 hour drive home.

Did you hear anymore about the body? We knew 2 had died - well one was air-lifted off and died on the way. We have never heard anymore about the poor lady that died. Had heard she had a heart attack at a slot machine.

you guys were knocking them off that sailing! That must be horrible to the family of the person who died on board. Very sad. Amazing that they you didn't get off until starting at 10 and they started boarding again at 11:30. Do you know what happened to the person who was airlifted?

Yes we thought it was a bit weird but with 3000 people on board I guess it's like a small town. The guy that was airlifted had been playing basketball and what happened is debated in several threads... he was finally air-lifted to a hospital and either died en route/on the ship/or at the hospital depending on what you read/heard. Do a search and you will find plenty of info. He was around 30ish, was healthy but may have had an enlarged heart without knowing it. He was in a christian rock band and was a DJ on a east coast FLA. christian radio station.

The lady I would like to know more about, but no ones seems to have any info. Hope her family is OK.

Once they started the checked baggage disembarkation I think over 2/3rd's of the ship was already off. We thought of doing the self-disembarkation but with a short ride home... and what we saw last March with the luggage I'd rather wait. If I had a couple of bags maybe but so many now take 4-5 HUGE bags thru the hallways not realizing that elevators/hallways/etc. are crowded already. You get bumped/pushed/shoved. I am a rather large man and have to be careful that I don't push back to hard... IT IS TEMPTING.

Cinderose, I LOVED your review. Your group looks like they can have fun under any circumstances. We have a group of about 12 going on the Fascination Aug. 8 and we always have fun too. Funny thing, my girlfriend cruise buddies and I have a picture of our feet very similar to yours.:D

We always walk the ship looking for fun photo opportunities.

Once we got on board I started going from floor to floor to put door signs on everyones cabin. When I got to the E deck there was a bank of rooms that were shut with black doors and a sign that said security investigation in progress. I did not dare open those. I just hope we werent in one of the rooms security was doing their thing in.

We were on the Fascination Jan 19-24 and we seemed to have picked the coldest week that Key West & Nassau has had in a long time. After staying the night before at the Clarion in Jacksonville we were shuttled to the pier and arrived about 12:30 only to be held up boarding due to a death on the ship. We also had one of our group that realized they had left their passport home in his filing cabinet back in Az. We were trying to figure out what to do, if he wasn’t able to get onto the ship how he could get the passport or his birth certificate over knighted to Miami and have him meet the boat in Key West. He had filled out his fun pass with the passport number on it so they had that. Well guess what? Carnival let him get on the ship without either! They told him it wasn’t getting on the ship that’s the problem it's getting off. And gave him a fax number to get his birth certificate copy faxed to him on the ship. He was able to get a hold of his son and get the birth cert faxed within hours (before we even sailed from port). Guess this was ok cause he didn’t have a problem getting off the ship. He lucked out. Probably didn’t hurt that he was a police officer either and had his ID from that. (Note: All smuggled alcohol made it on board and no one was called to the naughty room),

nice review, thanks a lot for it.

we are sailing feb 7th..one week !!

sure hope it is warmer than your week at sea..regardless, your group had a blast judging by all the pics submitted

robkos, welcome to cruise critic. Have you been to our roll call? As this was your 1st post, you may not even be aware of this. Look under roll call forums, Carnival, Fascination then the sail date. Some of us are meeting on sail away on sky deck, drink in hand, to watch as we go under the bridge.
