take passports off the ship?

Will a copy of your passport work on shore trips to the Caribbean?

You do not need to take your passport or a copy off the ship.

Usually either just the cruise ship card is good and when an official ID is needed to reboard in port then a drivers licence would suffice.

We only carry passports when we are booked on an excursion that is not through the cruise line AND that is going to a remote area where there might be a problem getting back due to vehicle problem, accident, or just a problem on rural third world roads. That seems to be the most likely scenario where you might miss the ship.

We see no need to take passports when we are touring/shopping in the nearby port city where we can arrange our own transportation to get back as needed.

We have not needed our passport on a cruise to get back onto the ship from a port of call.
