Visualizing Pompeii

Recommended Posts

If you too have problems imagining what ancient ruins used to look like, I found this book very helpful in appreciating what I was seeing. There is also extensive explanatory text for each of the sites.

There is also some coverage of Herculaneum and Villa Jovis on Capri. There is also an accompanying CD.

Pompeii Reconstructed - published by ArcheoLibri

I bought my copy at the entrance to Pompeii (16 euros in 2007) but unfortunately cannot find any reference to it on-line. An email is provided on the back page - archeolibri@gmail.com

Is this the book with the ruins and then a velum overlay that shows how it did look ?

We purchased one outside of Pompeii after our visit. Our private guide had one and she showed us where to get one.

We also purchased the same type at the Coliseum/Forum and one at the Vatican.

They are all on my coffee table lower shelf ! Love to look at them.

My book on Rome is the one done with the transparent plastic overlays.

The one on Pompeii is done with heavy cardboard overlays. I find the illustrations better in this one as it also includes images of people going about their day-to-day activities, not just the facade of the buildings.

Both added immeasurably to my understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of what I was seeing.
