bobbymcgee Posted November 18, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2004 My teenagers want to spend time on the beach. In Maui what beach can I get to ythat is near the whale watching adventure? Any beaches in Kona? We don't snorkel, just tan.

daWoods Posted November 18, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 18, 2004 The Pacific Whale Foundation is located near Maalaea Bay. From there you can go back out to the Honoapiilani Highway, turn right, and then right again on North Kihei Road. That will take you to Kihei and there's a great beach right there. Very short drive from where the whale watch tour leaves and arrives. Locals may know something closer, but the beach I'm thinking of is beautiful, and uncrowded. bobnsandi Posted November 19, 2004 #5 Share Posted November 19, 2004 daWoods is describing Sugar Beach, which is a very nice beach no more than ten minutes from Ma`alea Harbor. Not many amenities (porta potties), but nice.
Splinter Posted November 29, 2004 #6 Share Posted November 29, 2004 There is a small sandy beach right at the tender pier in Kona (on both sides) which is popular for both swimmers and snorkelers, but there is little space here for any privacy. We just returned and took the shuttle here to Kahalulu Beach (about 3 miles south of town). It is $10 round trip if you don't need snorkeling gear or $20 if you do. Not a sandy beach (small pebbles) but lots of space, bathrooms, cold showers and a place to eat. There are life guards. It is behind a reef, so no waves, but lots of good snorkeling in shallow water. Watch for someone with a "beach shuttle" sign at the pier when you get off the tender.
