Age cutoff

We are sailing on the Triumph on march 8th and have a camp carnival question? Our DD is going to be 2 weeks short of her 12th birthday and we are wondering if she can go up a level to the 12 -14 yo group. Also at what age do people let there kids stay in the cabin alone. Our 11 yo babysitts her 7 yo sister a little here and there for short times. Is it a bad idea to leave them alone at night for a couple hour to see a show or go to the casino?? Thanks Everyone

2 weeks from 12? I am sure they will let her be in that group. I would think so anyway. As I understand it there are felxible with things like that.

 

Camp Carnival is free until 10pm, so you can do whatever you want until then at no extra cost. Then after that they have babysitting charges.

Watch out...here come the flames. You've brought up a touchy subject on this board - you'll get a million different answers how to parent! All I will say is that you need to know you child and whether you are comfortable with what you are doing. I will say that CCL lets parents decide if their 9-11 year olds can sign themselves in and out of camp. I got flamed by several people for saying that I let my son have that privilege (all kinds of worries from sexual preditors, to falling overboard)...but he was almost 10 at the time and we had a plan where/when he would check in. It worked beautifully and he was very cautious and responsible...far more so than many of the young "adults" I saw on board.

 

As for moving up age groups, that is generally not allowed. But, you can always ask, but be prepared for "no." They do have babysitting provided for a fee after 10, and some nights they have late night parties for the kids (also a small extra fee) so mom and dad can stay out.

Actually, CC if relatively strict about their age policy. It all depends on the circumstances, the number of kids already in each group and other factors.

 

Go to the CC meet and greet the first night and discuss it with the staff. Arguing with the staff or trying to cheat will NOT get it done.

On other threads I have heard the exact opposite about flexibility with age groups. However, the flexibility might more be with going down in age groups and not up. I even met a couple on the Triumph where their children were allowed to be togther despite being in different age groups, but again I think the older one had to go down a group and not the other way around.

As long as your elder child knows exactly what to do should an emergency arrive (like what station to go to for a lifeboat, etc. and how to get your other child there), a way to contact you should you be needed in an emergency, and this is a common thing at your home, why not? Personally, I would just leave 'em with the Carnival camp sitters! That way, after the show, you can go back to the room with hubby for a little... nightcap.

They are VERY strict on the CC rule. They are not going to let her move up. As far as staying in the cabin that is a decision that you have to make.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I have a 15 (almost 16) and 14 1/2 year old who are both in high school. They have most of the same friends. I was hoping my youngest would be able to stay with her older brother and hang out with the other high schoolers on the ship in an organized setting. It sounds like that might not be the case though???

Those ages have total freedom to come and go so I wouldn't worry about it. They meet, make some friends and then just sorta hang out...like at home!;)

I assumed they would be strict about the age cutoff until I read on another thread acout club O2. The lady said that there was a 3 month window for Club O2. She said it was for beofe your b-day and after you would make it. I posted just about the same question there and asked if that was just for club o2 or any CC. I didnt get any responce. I hope to talk to them when we get on board. We were not going to try to sneek her in to the wrong one.

In my experience, they are very strict about moving kids up to the next age group - particularly when you're moving from CC to 02, or from the younger CC to the 9-11 group where they can sign themselves out.

 

Whether you want to push the issue depends on your daughter's maturity level. I know when my son is almost 12, he'll probably still be more comfortable in the 9-11 group - he's smart, but kind of young for his age socially, and I fear he'd be eaten alive in the older group. My daughter, on the other hand, is almost 8, and if I could get away with putting her in the 9-11 group NOW, I would do it in a heartbeat ;)

 

Don't count on being able to get her in the older group - but it's worth a try. And know that she'll have fun regardless of which group she ends up in.

My 5 yo was 2-3 weeks short of her 6th bday and they let her move up wtih no problems to the 6-8 group. My oldest was 3 months shy of her 15th bday and they her go to club O2 (15+). The club O2 said there is a 3-month window ( my dd made that by 2 days); don't know if that window applies to CC.

 

That said, we cruised in Jan. If they have a sailing with a lot of kids, I have heard they won't be flexible just due to the number of kids assigned to each group and the # of counselors assigned to each group. OP, March 8 might or might not be crowded with kids. It is too early for our spring break, but I am sure some have spring break that early.
