Maraprince Posted February 18, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted February 18, 2009 St. John's, New Brunswick. They are the rock formations that look like gigantic flower pots when exposed at low tide that you see in the ads where you can walk on the bottom of the ocean. Once high tide comes in, they are submerged. Amazing to be able to see them at low tide! MARAPRINCE

Acey Posted February 18, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 18, 2009 Anyone book a private tour to the Hopewell Rocks? Approx. cost and who with. MARAPRINCE Well, a few things to consider: - what is the tide schedule the day you arrive - will the tide be out for you to enjoy the rocks? - a return trip is 4 hours of driving, so you need to consider if it is worth driving all that way. Generally speaking, this is not a tourist attraction that draws cruise ship visitors coming to Saint John due to the distance from ship. If "walking the ocean floor" is the appeal, a St. Martin's excursion may be just as interesting: http://reelwaterproductions.com/eastern-horizons/wp-content/uploads/boatsstmartin-FUNDY.jpg http://i.pbase.com/g6/26/704026/2/72048316.qrtc6WSQ.jpg http://www.sermonillustrator.org/illustrator/images/seacaves.JPG - taxis charge $50 per hour for a private tour - so it would be over $250. Hope this helps!
Maraprince Posted February 19, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Carnival is offering 2 excursions -- one 7 hrs. and one 9 hrs. with a picnic style lunch to enjoy at your leisure. It cannot be booked until you are on the ship and is listed as limited. No price is given. There is also another 7 hr. tour that may or may not go to the Hopewell Rocks. So it seems we will be in St. John's long enough. MARAPRINCE

However, due to the distance of Hopewell Rocks from Saint John, it may be cheaper to take the excursion offered by the ship. There are tour vans (mini van) you can hire along Water Street or outside Long Wharf (depending where you dock) that offer tours - I'm sure they would take you to Hopewell if you want - perhaps if you have 4 or 5 people to go it may be cost effective. Another option is to rent a car - if you do decide to go to Hopewell, be sure to stop in the village of Alma along the way (you drive right through it) for a world famous "sticky bun" from Kelly's Bake Shop: http://www.thedatafarm.com/blog/content/binary/sticky.jpg http://image64.webshots.com/164/4/73/63/469747363zYpnCV_ph.jpg
