docboy Posted February 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Hey Everyone, I recall on the Carnival website, the sushi bar is included in the cruise price. How exactly does it work? Is their a specialty restaurant you go to and order sushi? I assume sakai you have to pay for... How is the quality? Do they serve rolls, sashimi? Any spider or caterpillar rolls? Thanks! pnjkeith Posted February 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Free sushi, sake costs extra. California rollls mostly, but varies. Nightly 5:30 to 8pm.
buddyjo143 Posted February 19, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Sushi is served from about 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. from a cart on the same deck as the casino and bars (at least on most of the Carnival ships I have been on). There is a choice of 4 or maybe 5 items per evening. Rolls and sashimi, ususally. Nothing overly fancy and no choices other then those offerings. It is free though and you can have as much as you like. I personally like having a little snack before dinner, especially since DH does not care for sushi. I get my fix on the ship. Martini Mom Posted February 19, 2009 #6 Share Posted February 19, 2009 We ate the sushi on the Elation last month. I didn't even notice that they had it till the last night (I guess I didn't read all of the Caper). It was pretty good. They had only a few choice, mostly rolls. It was free and was served from a tiny sushi bar on the Promenade deck (kinda tucked away in a corner). On our next cruise in November, I will definitely have it more often. Is their a specialty restaurant you go to and order sushi? I assume sakai you have to pay for... How is the quality? Do they serve rolls, sashimi? Any spider or caterpillar rolls? Thanks! On Liberty they had three different selections each day, two rolls and a nigiri sushi; never saw sashimi...it was ok, overall, for a cruise ship... cookc61462 Posted February 20, 2009 #12 Share Posted February 20, 2009 Better have it on Fantasy in May :) It was ok on the Imagination last July. California rolls mostly. I don't know if anyone else in my party will eat it, but I WILL!:D

Carnival AZIPOD Posted February 20, 2009 #14 Share Posted February 20, 2009 I had it on the Elation. I believe they only had 4 choices, and I literally had to wait 30-40 minutes in line to get to the counter. It was pretty basic but decent, nothing fancy. I wouldn't save my tummy for it. You'll be disappointed. But I'm from San Francisco, there's probably over 100+ sushi places here, so it didn't matter to me if I didn't have a California Roll while on the cruise. :)
sam1148 Posted February 20, 2009 #15 Share Posted February 20, 2009 Try the fish and chips bars upstairs on the Lido. They offer a Cured "raw" Tuna served on watermelon..which was better quality raw fish than the sushi bar. They also offered wasabi and soy sauce at the Fish and Chips place and a ceviche seafood mix. No rice tho..I just got three and ate them shishime style. That place is open every day for lunch and quite good...but you have to look for it..upstairs from the main Lido deck/buffet. Like the location and quality, ok? :D The sushi on the Elation and Paradise are OK. Not great as our local sushi bar, but like the type I can get at my local Vons. A limited selection of four types, seems to change at times. Usually a cut roll of some sort and some nigiri. Last time they had marinated carrots that were really good. These were in the condiments section. No line for those things. But would that be cutting into a buffet line? :rolleyes:A question for another thread...... The sushi bar on these two ships is across from the casino bar towards midships, directly behind the main (permanent) photo kiosk. It is kindof hidden. Definitly way too small to showcase a whole octopus. docboy- exactly the same area on both ships. They also served california roll at lunch one day in the DR. luvtovaca Posted February 20, 2009 #23 Share Posted February 20, 2009 If we've never had sushi but are willing to try, would the cruise be a good choice for our first time trying sushi? Any recommendations for what to try? We have no idea!

Any recommendations for what to try? We have no idea! The sushi on the ships is OK. Not great, but perfectly adequate. A good place to try it out. The California roll is rice, nori (seaweed wrapper), maybe cucumber, maybe avocado and some fake crab (krab). Don't forget to dip it. Dip it into a mixture of soy sauce and add a tiny amount of wasabi (the green horseradish). The pickled ginger is a palate cleanser. The nigiri is fish on a clump of rice. We converted a Welsh lady on our last cruise. The look on her husband's face was priceless.
