SWPSquared Posted February 20, 2009 #26 Share Posted February 20, 2009 If we've never had sushi but are willing to try, would the cruise be a good choice for our first time trying sushi? Any recommendations for what to try? We have no idea!I'm not sure that a cruise ship is the best place to try it. It really depends. When I've had Carnival sushi (~10 years ago on Paradise and a year ago on Fascination), it was about supermarket quality at best. It's kind of for you to decide, but think about some dish you really like, and whether you'd stick with it if you had tried it for the first time at Denny's :) - Steve
tampabrat22 Posted February 20, 2009 #27 Share Posted February 20, 2009 A few years ago we had sushi a few nights on the Inspiration and it was really good. I can't remember exactly what was offered but there was about 5 choices. The sushi bar was located on the Promenade deck by the Violins Bar. And this past December we tried the sushi on the Miracle a few times at the sushi bar and at my cousins onboard wedding. The sushi bar was located by the Fountainhead Cafe and had about 4 choices, I think there were two rolls and two types of nigiri. I am not a sushi expert, I prefer the rolls here at a local place called Tsunami, but the ones they were serving on the Miracle were not too good. BUT the sushi we had at the wedding was awesome, so I'm not too sure why there was such a difference in quality?! The pictures below are sushi from the wedding (on the Miracle)... jennbill Posted February 20, 2009 #28 Share Posted February 20, 2009 On our January Spirit cruise, the sushi was pretty darned good. Different choices than I've seen on Carnival before. We like to grab two or three pieces as a nice pre-dinner snack.
LPYRCRUISER Posted February 20, 2009 #29 Share Posted February 20, 2009 I think a cruise is the perfect place to try anything new! I had never eaten sushie before our Destiny cruise last February. I got hooked. Every night before dinner our group would go up to the casino bar, have a cocktail with our sushie. If you don't like it, what has it cost you? I'm very adventurous on cruises in the food area. If you don't like your choice, get something else. Try it, you'll like it!
StrangeBrew Posted February 20, 2009 #30 Share Posted February 20, 2009 is that a clown fish on the photo? Do they serve this..or is it only available on disney? lol
Ladyvdr Posted February 20, 2009 #31 Share Posted February 20, 2009 The sushi they had on the Pride was pretty awful. Just rolls that were not good. Couldn't even tell if there was fish in there. Celebrity had an actual sushi station with real sushi rolls and fish on rice like tuna, octopus, yellowtail, etc. Much better.
CuriousMind Posted February 20, 2009 #32 Share Posted February 20, 2009 I had it on the miracle and legend ... my friend just came back from liberty and it was there too off on the pride in june and read that it is there also ... cant wait mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Hi, Could you please tell me where you found sushi on Miracle? And do they serve sushi anywhere else on Miracle, like the supper club? Thanks for the info.
docboy Posted February 20, 2009 Author #33 Share Posted February 20, 2009 The sushi on the Elation and Paradise are OK. Not great as our local sushi bar, but like the type I can get at my local Vons. A limited selection of four types, seems to change at times. Usually a cut roll of some sort and some nigiri. Last time they had marinated carrots that were really good. These were in the condiments section. No line for those things. But would that be cutting into a buffet line? :rolleyes:A question for another thread...... The sushi bar on these two ships is across from the casino bar towards midships, directly behind the main (permanent) photo kiosk. It is kindof hidden. Definitly way too small to showcase a whole octopus. docboy- exactly the same area on both ships. They also served california roll at lunch one day in the DR. Thanks! From looking at the Paradise deck plan, the sushi bar like you said is located beside the photo gallery on the Promenade level. http://www.carnival.com/Deck_Plan.aspx?shipCode=PA
dan40 Posted February 20, 2009 #34 Share Posted February 20, 2009 Carnival only serves sushi with COOKED seafood, octopus, eel, smoked fish. And Ca. style rolls. There is no sashimi [raw fish]. What they serve is OK, but far from an authentic 'sushi' bar. Dan
Guienevere_Arianette Posted February 20, 2009 #35 Share Posted February 20, 2009 They also have one night in the DR where you can order a sushi plate for a starter.. Personally, I enjoy the sushi bars on the ship. I like to go about 5:30 for a light snack, follow with a cocktail, and then have dinner around 8:00 :D The ceviche in the fish and chips area is pretty good too, but they need to up the serving so I don't have to get in line three times for it :o
islahopper Posted February 20, 2009 #36 Share Posted February 20, 2009 Last month on the Legend they had the sushi at the sushi bar and several evenings in the Seaview Bistro, it wasn't bad.

Any recommendations for what to try? We have no idea! No, the key to a quality sushi is the freshness of the product. Cruiselines do not provide fresh, most if not all seafood is frozen. Of course there is a difference, the wedding sushi was paid for, the other sushi is FREE!:D I think you should try the sushi, and just keep in mind that if you like something....you can get much better quality at a nice sushi bar on land. I can't complain about the sushi, ITS FREE!:p I've been on NCL my last three cruises, and I'm really looking forward to my Carnival cruise coming up on April 12th (Triumph). I'm getting excited about the fact that there seems little I will have to pay extra for. I think we are done with NCL for awhile, they charge you for just about EVERYTHING!!!! They nickel and dime you to death! So free sushi, whether its great or not, sounds really good to me!!!!

I tried the caviar sushi that was served at the wedding, I probably would have never tried it at home, so I'm glad I did (even though I didnt like it). brown_eyedgal Posted March 4, 2009 #47 Share Posted March 4, 2009 We were just on the Fantasy at the beginning of February. We enjoyed the sushi every night! Some was better than others...the tuna was really good!:) The sushi on the Paradise this past weekend looked similar to this. It was so-so...but I spend 3 weeks in Japan a year so I get the freshest, best sushi ever then! Not "free" but pretty darn close to it. Cheap cheap cheap in Japan. :D
buddyjo143 Posted March 4, 2009 #48 Share Posted March 4, 2009 Someone asked if you can get sushi at other times. We were just on the Sensation and ate lunch in the dining room on our sea day. They had an appetizer of California roll. It was o.k.
Dave85 Posted March 4, 2009 #49 Share Posted March 4, 2009 Sushi was an appetizer one night in the MDR on the Splendor. It was weird looking (not what I'm used to seeing as sushi) but quite tasty. It was tuna of some sort.
JCieslak Posted March 4, 2009 #50 Share Posted March 4, 2009 I was on the Miracle a couple of weeks ago and my opinion on the sushi is that it is forgettable. I love sushi and eat it several times a week so I was excited about the sushi bar and I was sorely disappointed. If you are more of a sushi purist then you will be turned off. The eel had a BBQ sauce instead of a terriyaki, the rolls were filled with the tiniest piece of fish and then a lot of filler. On my next cruise I will skip it all together.
