when does sailaway end, and port taxes end?

Recommended Posts

ok, a recent thread mentions taxes while in port, when does the ship stop taking taxes? when you back away from the pier? a mile out of port? do they anounce it? just curious as this is our first cruise.

Thanks,

The ships stops being charged "port taxes" when the pilot leaves the ship upon departing the port.

As you may know, the port Pilot boards the ship, takes it from docking out of any channel or harbor and then turns the wheel back to the Captain. The Pilot then leaves the ship on the Pilot boat which has been following along. It's at that point the charges stop.

But, the phrase 'port taxes' most often means what the ship pays to use the port, not what you pay while on board. You pay this fee when you book the cruise. You will not see any difference in the price you pay for beverages, etc, while in port vs. out of port.

Unless I'm really confused.

Rich, I think you are confused. :)

Port taxes are collected as part of your fare and paid to the port as a docking fee of sorts.

Also though, when you are in port, the ship collects local taxes. In Fort Lauderdale for example, you have to pay state tax on alcoholic beverages you purchase while the ship is still docked. If you look on the bill, it tells you how much it is - it is really not much. Not enough to deter me from enjoying that first Mojito as soon as possible after boarding the ship!
