mountainhouse Posted February 23, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2009 We were in St. Thomas on Saturday. We were first off the ship at 7:15A. I don't believe the "public taxes" ($2 pp) run in front of the Crown pier entrance. So we asked the regular taxis about getting to Red Hook. They all wanted full taxis before they'd leave - they weren't helpful, boarding on rude. Finally another taxi showed, and she convinced one of the drivers to take us to the pier for the Charlotte Amalie ferry (for $8 total). We caught the "public taxi" there and headed to Red Hook. In hindsight, I wish we'd just walked from Crown until we saw the "public taxis" running (I think a 1/3 mile). We'd hoped to catch the 8AM ferry, but got the 9AM instead. Bit of a hassle, but what a wonderful day on St. John! Definitely worth the effort. By the way, for a change of scene, we took the Charlotte Amalie ferry to return. Ms411 Posted February 24, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2009 You're right. The public transportation going to Red Hook does not stop directly in front of the Crown Bay dock entrance. You might be better of contacting the VI Taxi Association, 340-774-4550, and asking for private pick up at the dock. Tell them the number of people in your party, get a rate quote, name and number of driver, and have that information when you disembark. It'll save you lots of precious time. TheVegasMan Posted February 24, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 24, 2009 Or you could have relaxed and caught the 9:00 ferry from CA, it's $5 more per person, but it's real convenient.

We were relaxed. Just figured we'd see more taking the public taxi. It was a fun ride!
