Airport Questions in 'Santo Domingo

We have heard that the airport is very chaotic. Has anyone had experience with this and can offer advise on what to do to make sure your luggage isn't stolen, we aren't hounded by people wanting money from us for services, and how can we locate safe and efficient transport? There are 5 of us plus luggage, is there a taxi/van or will we have to take two taxi's?

 

We have a return flight at 2am - how soon do you recommend we get to the airport for our flight? We have heard it is a pretty "non-tourist" friendly facility, so we don't want to be where we will feel uncomfortable for longer than necessary. OR are we worried for nothing? Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.
