Kayaking information please!

I want to kayak in either Maui or Kona, and the ships tendering doesn't make it easy to be at the locations on time for scheduled private tours.

Has anyone gone kayaking by renting the kayaks and going off on their own for the day?

If so , who is the best to use and where it is safe to kayak at these locations for beginners. Are there any hotels that rent kayaks for the day , where one could kayak in a bay?

TIA

I have a similar interest in this kayaking question. I was wondering if anyone could help with the Carnival excursion offered at Kona called Kona Kayak Adventure. Whether it was good, would you recommend it? Jan, I see you are sailing on the Carnival Spirit as well. You aren't considering the ship's kayak excursion?

I am but I would prefer to not do a ship's excursion if I didn't have to. But it looks good, and it might be what we end up doing. I just like to go and be a local, however I have a car rented and I am not sure about the soft carriers, or where to snorkel safely.

Hopefully someone can tell us about the shore excursion!
