$5.00 For A Red Stripe??

I thought you were allowed to bring beer onboard in port. You just have to check it with security once on the ship ;) We bought a bunch of rum from the Appleton Rum Factory in September 08 and there was no one at the alcohol table to even check it in. We just walked right past and took it to our room. Is there where you are talking about having to flirt or is it Jamaican security??? I'm confused. We didn't have to even pull out our bags in Jamaica through the Jamaican security. It was funny because the RCI ship in port was getting ready to leave and they were just running those passengers through without even checking or looking at them. I hope things are that easy in November. Would love to take some Red Stripe home.

Well since you can lay out on a SoCal beach AND find a cheap beach bar there. You have to factor travel costs in to that Pacifico price.

And Beaches Ain't bars. Bars is bars.

I can walk across the street with a cooler full of beer and lay on a Fl.beach.

But I'd rather pay a bartender on a cruise ship $5.00 for a beer,,,,

better breeze!!!:D

Dan

I was comparing the lido deck (not bar) to the beach:D When I am stuck on a ship that is where I will be......unless of course it is night time and you will find me in the casino:D

If you want to compare bars and cheap beer......we would bicker all nite long...:p

BTW I can't recall any cheap beach bar out here in SoCal.......

Yeah but if I'm in Newport Beach I don't care what the beer costs....it's worth almost anything...(especially @ Woody's Wharf!!)

Gotta lean Waaayy into the wind in hurricane season tho.:D

And in July and August, you'd turn into a crispy critter in no time at all. Hard to find a cooler big enough for late summer.

Take out the word beach and your statement would still be true...No?

I don't understand the comparing bars and cheap beers part. They is what they is, isn't they?

True..........

I guess my point was I was comparing the lido deck (bar if you will)

with a beach bar in Mexico when you asked this question below:

Tell me of any bar anywhere that is as well turned out, as well kept, is as clean, has equal ambiance and equal service, as the cruise ship bars do, that DOES NOT charge $5.00 for a bottle of beer.

If my cruise goes to Jamaica should I really have to pay $5.00 for a Red Stripe while on the ship?? What do you think??

Jeez...I dunno...If I leave from a port in the US should I really have to pay $5.00 for a Budlight ??????

I think the overall complaint is just that beer...regardless of brand...is about $5/can...or bottle...on the ship. That IS HIGH DOLLAR!!! I don't care who you are...or where you are...$5 a beer is steep!!!

If you want to pay RON'S ROACH HOUSE BAR prices, DRINK at RON'S ROACH HOUSE!!

Or wait until you get to Jamaica and go to a local joint where you can get a RS for $1. US. And robbed, pick pocketed, knifed, etc., but cheep beer!!!

Dan

Oh please. If that was the fate of tourists you don't think there would be a US warning about DO NOT GO TO JAMAICA??? Be careful of where you go where-ever you go. Have you been to bars in the wrong part of town in Kansas City or Louisville or Chicago etc etc etc?

OK there are lots of toilets, here, there and everywhere, good luck!

4 visits to Jamaica, No really good reason to get off the ship again. I avoid cruises that stop there. I find it a throughly unpleasant place, and I mean the people!

Those are often-times the best bars of all.....kinda like the "real" pubs in London or Ireland. An analogy would be a dirty "greasy spoon" that serves the best breakfast imaginable...with no gratuity up-front;).

I have had the great good fortune to travel all over the world. I have been to some of the wildest, woolliest places on the globe. And visited some horrendous dives and eaten things you don't want to know about. I have been shot at, robbed at gunpoint [twice] and bloodied up pretty good. And I still am willing to go anywhere even tho I know I'm too old for that stuff now.

The thing I've always enjoyed the most is the people. I am interested in them and they know it and respond to it [with a few criminal exceptions:rolleyes:]

I have no fear of Jamaica, I have found the people to be incredibly rude, pushy, untrustworthy, and UNINTERESTING. Nothing bad has happened to me there. I have enjoyed Dunn's River falls a couple of times and have partied hardy at Margaritaville. Just found too many unpleasant people EVERYWHERE!

We sell Red Stripe at our liquor store and is very popular - could buy 6 for less than you pay for two but this is cruising. My wine I can buy for under $8 and paid $32 on the ship - it is the convenience of being able to get it.

I would love to have a beer with you someday and talk about our "experiences"...especially the bad ones...learning experiences. Anyway, I'm taking my two daughters (15 & 17) on a Freedom cruise that stops in Ocho Rios.....here, I booked a Carnival excursion to Dunn's/Bamboo Beach Club...totally escorted. In Key West & Grand Cayman I booked private excursions because of less worries. Thanks for saying what you said.

Trying to find the lowest possible price will drive one crazy[er] than one already is. Way, way back I was a territory mgr. for a manufacturer. I went into a potential account deep in my territory. I always entered thru the warehouse to see what was going on. Enter thru the office and you learn nothing. Saw thousands of my products, thought this is a duck, since I have the best prices, after all we make the product. Went in the office, short talk and he gave me his catalog. He was RETAILING my product for less than I could sell it to him. Never found his source and never sold him a unit.

Price is always, "Whatever the traffic will bear!"

If you go to Margaritaville or one of the other chains where people like to hang out......you'll pay 5.00 for a Red Stripe.

On the other hand, find a locally owned beachside hut with a small bar and you'll pay 2.00-3.00.

If you dock in Ocho Rios, walk off the ship, through the outer security gates.....keep on the right hand sidewalk. Very shortly, you'll come to an opening in a wooden fence on the right. This is a locally owned place with a few tables and a great view. Usually there is a local guy set up with a grill doing jerked chicken and pork. I've paid 1.50-3.00 for a Red Stripe here....depending upon the mood of the bartender, I suppose. You can also get the best plate of authentic jerk chicken around for 10.00..delish.

Thanks G'ma...that sounds awesome (the Ocho Rios jerk chicken-red stripe part);).

Thanks Karen. What about the frisking when getting back on the ship??

You're normally not frisked. You go through their security where they check all your bags, purses, etc. I suppose if they suspect some illegal substance might be a possibility, they'd do a body frisk....this is not an unusual occurance in Jamaica .... especially the knuckleheads who think they can really smuggle marijuana on the ship.

This is an activity that usually attracts the younger ones whose brains aren't quite matured yet......
