Mimi the Great Posted March 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 16, 2009 So as a cruising newbie, I'm filled with the typical questions and anticipation of fun. I plan to do excursions and such so I've been having this re-occurring thought; Where do I put my stuff? By this I mean, when I leave the ship, I will probably have a bag with my S&S card, money, towel, maybe slip on tennis, bathing suit and or change of clothes. So then I thought, when I'm on the beach, where do I put this stuff so that it's safe? Yes, I've been to the beach before but I feel like I've never had this much important "stuff" with me. Am I crazy or just making too much of this?:eek:

EH.. maybe depending what ur day will involve.. but i say.. wear the ones u need and dont bring a spare. sneaks are best for heavy walking... unless u can do it comfortable in flip flops. as far as leaving ur card $$ and camera safe while on an excursion.. it will be fine.. u will be w. a limited # of people most likely all from ur ship unless u go private. w directors who do it alll day every day. if they had been getting complaints of stolen personals.. they would not be in business. i think ull be less paranoid then the tourist walking around time square scared of pick pockets. :D
cv322 Posted March 16, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 16, 2009 Bring a small bag with your sign & sail card, a little cash, camera, sunscreen, a good book and, IMHO, you do need a towel. Otherwise just wear a little sundress over your bathing suit....no need for a change of clothes. I've left my beach bag on the beach (while I was in the ocean) at every single port of call on all of my cruises and have never once had an item go missing. You will most likely have many of your cruisemates on the same beach with you (we're all identifiable by having the same color or striped towel ;))...and everyone kind of looks out for everyone's "stuff". Enjoy your cruise!
BoPippy Posted March 16, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 16, 2009 i guess my job is to use a backpack for my dw and myself to put camera, card, cash, credit, towel, trinket shopping, beer purchases, snorkel mask, etc always worked well for us,go in the water, leave on chair with other tourists and or keep a watch on it and pitty the thief who tries to steal it(he will never again)
happy cruzer Posted March 16, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2009 To me the real problem is the camera. We live our nice one in the safe and take a waterproof disposable to the beach. Then we only bring a little cash, credit card, and room key that fits in a waterproof wallet. we wear water shoes. If you are on a tour, usually you can leave some of your things in the bus. If you need alot of stuff just make sure if it disappears you won't be too disappointed.
DukeFamily Posted March 16, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2009 Take as little as possible with you. I keep money, cc, s&s card in a water safe, so that's on me even if I'm in the water. I DID have my camera stolen out of my bag at Paradise Beach in Coz. SO...from now on I will make certain that someone in our party is watching the "stuff" and we'll just trade off getting in the water, or whatever. Or, more likely, I will not take along my good digital and only take the Fuji disposable water proof for those kinds of days. (I mention Fuji because I was shocked at the excellent quality of the pictures. Really can't be beat, imo.)

Enjoy your cruise! Just be careful - we carry a backpack and have had no problems any where but Jamaica - no way would I leave anything of value and just walk away. We had someone is our group at Dunns Falls, someone "thought" to be part of the guides said they would hold her camera as she made her way up the falls..get to the top and he was no where to be found! mousey Posted March 16, 2009 #8 Share Posted March 16, 2009 We too have never had anything stolen, but we are pretty cautious. We don't take anything of value (i.e., anything we would miss if taken). The credit card, cash, and s&s card go into a waterproof, plastic box, that instead of hanging around his neck, the DH puts around his waist. I agree that you do need a towel, but not a change of clothes. I always wear a t-shirt and shorts over my bathingsuit, and dry off before I put them back on after swimming or snorkeling. I don't care if the t-shirt or shorts get damp on the way back to the ship, or even if I go shopping afterwards, because everyone knows you've been to the beach, and no one really cares. We never take a good camera with us to the beach. We've taken great pictures using disposable carmers, both regular and waterproof.
Mimi the Great Posted March 23, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted March 23, 2009 So here's another silly question *cruising newbie*: Do they provide beach towels or do I pack one from home?
GXmanDC Posted March 23, 2009 #10 Share Posted March 23, 2009 I take my wallet with limited cash, beach towel, my ship card, my Amex card and my passport. I will take a disposable camera if we are at the beach, digital if we are doing a tour. The backpack is never out of my site, usually on my person. At the beach we take turns watching our stuff. I have not sailed all of the different lines. RCI provides beach towels in your room. I have a feeling they all do, I've seen lots on Carnival, HAL, Princess and NCL towels in the ports. Have a great cruise!
Bonnie J. Posted March 23, 2009 #11 Share Posted March 23, 2009 Mimi, hit instant 'email notification' when you post and that's what you will get - you won't have to hunt for an answer, it will come directly to you! No, don't bring a towel from home! Takes up too much space in your suitcase and is not needed. You can take the beach towel left in your room, get one by the pool and some ships have them as you leave the ship. We take our S&S cards, little cash, always a credit card and keep all that in my husband's short's pocket, we wear a bathing suit under our shorts. We fold up our clothes and put them in our beach bag and leave that on the beach. I have an underwater digital I keep on my wrist but before that took a FUGI disposable underwater camera. We have been on over 50 cruises (since mid 80's) and Key West is the ONLY place we took our passports off the ship! It was annouced we'd need them but have never figured out why! Jamacia is the only place we watched each other's tuff - this was a very public, native beach, not the one by ship in Ocho Rios. shelby_36 Posted March 23, 2009 #12 Share Posted March 23, 2009 I'm a mom of 3 plus hubby. So we usually can't get away with "just our card and cash." But what I do is I carry a fanny pack with cash, cards, ids. and I have a camera I wouldn't be crushed over if it got lost (I leave the other memory cards on board) I carry a beach bag with some snacks, water, a towel or two, dd inhaler, and I keep an eye on it but if it got lost or stolen its all replaceable. The fanny pack doesn't leave my side. When we snorkel - someone is always out of the water with my youngest daughter so there is always someone to watch it. Warning: There was a lady on our last snorkel trip that realized at the end that her watersafe had opened sometime during the dive and she lost her id, SS card, creditcard and the cash she had. I don't know if they ever found it. They can open.
Jacky4 Posted March 23, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 23, 2009 Any excursion other than the beach will have a place for personal belongings. There is usually lockers for a small fee.
05mak05 Posted March 23, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 23, 2009 One of the handiest things I've ever bought for a cruise is the waterproof "See It Safe Witz Box." I ordered a clear one from the REI website. http://www.rei.com/product/723131 The Witz boxes come in different sizes but the one I like is clear, 3.7" X 2.5" and perfect for your ID, room key, a $20 for the casino, etc. I wear it around my neck when boarding and immediately put my Sea Pass card in it so that I don't misplace it before ever getting to the room! For diving or snorkling, I'd probably duct tape it just to be doublely safe. And, that brings up duct tape - ha!
Rare John Bull Posted March 24, 2009 #15 Share Posted March 24, 2009 No, you're probably not crazy, but yes, you're worrying too much. Other posters have given great advice - make sure your swimwear has a secure pocket for your seapass(boarding card) & mebbe one -but not your only- credit card, plus a ship's beach towel & inexpensive odds (best not an expensive camera etc) & a few dollars in a handy bag, a change of clothing only if you're planning to go into town before going back to the ship. Ask your beach neighbours to watch over your stuff, expect the same to be asked of you - there's a great cameraderie out there. So stop worrying.......and enjoy. nitnyleo Posted March 24, 2009 #16 Share Posted March 24, 2009 I keep all the important stuff in my bro. Everything else is in the knapsack . . . and. actually, I'd be more upset with the loss of my knapsack than the stuff that was in it.
