A short press release from the Cayman Islands Government website may be of interest to cruisers on the Carnival Freedom, Carnival Triumph, Inspiration, Liberty of the Seas, or Vision Star on May 20, 2009.

Looks like alcohol sales will be banned during you port of call except for duty free purchases which are deliverd to your ship.

Liquor Ban on Election Day

The Liquor Licensing Board of Grand Cayman is advising licence holders that on Election Day (20 May 2009), no intoxicating liquor can be sold, offered for sale, or given away during and just after poll time.

Sale and use of liquor may resume at 7:00 pm, one hour after the closing of the polls.

However, the Board may exempt any bar serving an airport and any duty-free shop located at an airport or serving a seaport in respect of sales to outgoing passengers only.

For further information, licensees and members of the public may contact Marva Scott at the Liquor Licensing Office at 946-5446 ext. 5.

Just to bump this up for those coming in next week on Wednesday May 20, 2009.

Further the Liquor Licensing Board issued another statement that no alcohol sales will be permitted until after 7pm (one hour after closing of the polls) on election day. This includes duty free and airport sales. Apparently the provisions of the law do not permit for any exceptions.

Ships currently scheduled in Cayman on this date include Carnival Ecstasy, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Inspiration, and Liberty of the Seas.

Carnival Inspiration is back again on Thursday so those passengers can plan their duty free shopping accordingly.

You would still be able to get liquor delivered back to the ship, though. But it doesn't look like much of a fun beach day.

Thanks for the info drew. Would it be legal to bring a couple of beers from the ship with us to the beach? I wouldn't want to get in any trouble but my husband likes to have a couple of beers while we are at the beach. What is the reasoning behind this liquor ban?

I won't be starting my vacation there until the 23rd. Not like my days in college when working as a poll watcher in Albany, NY there was always a bar set up in the polling place by the Democrats. Once in a beauty parlor. Another time in a fire station. And cops used to escort the senior citizens from nursing homes into the booth so that they voted right and could stay in the city homes. I don't think they ever lost an election in 90 years. Now the fun is gone everywhere.
