Crown Bay to Everywhere Else

Our Dec. 6 Volendam will be docking at Crown Bay. Several of us want to know what is the best way to get from there to everywhere else including cost and time involved. Such as to downtown Charlotte Amalie. Or since we will be in port until midnight, we are planning on taking the tram up to Paradise Point to watch the sunset.

Also, how safe is traveling around that area after dark. I know in my hometown there are places that are safe after dark and places you definitely do NOT want to journey to after dark.

Thanks!

Charlotte Amalie all but shuts down when most of the cruise ships leave (around 5:00 PM), so you won't even have a reason to stay in town much after that. Strolling around resorts should be fine. We spent a week there last summer and were told to always take a cab if we wanted to go anywhere after dark.

The area around the tramway should be fine after dusk due to the volume of people that will be there to watch the sun set. But you may want to take a cab to go anywhere else afterwards.

Hello,

Dec. 6 is a Monday. The Tram to Paradise Point closes at 5pm on Mondays. Last ride up is 4:30pm and last ride down is 5pm. Sunset will be around 5:50pm. The only days they open late are Tuesday (till 7pm) and Wednesdays (till 9pm).

The best way from Crown Bay anywhere on the island is by taxi unless you are going to say the Water Island ferry or Tickles restaurant - they are located at the Crown bay marina a short walk from where the ships dock.

You can find some Crown bay to popular spot taxi rates at:

http://www.*****/general_usvi/cruiseship/cruiseguide_page3.php

To downtown the rate is $3.50 per person/one way and it takes about 8-10 minutes.

Crown bay is fine at night, not saying go wonder around closed, dark office buildings but in general the area is not problematic. Charlotte Amalie shops close down at 5pm as Richtersl pointed out however the restaurants and bars along the Waterfront are open, some until midnight, 2am... they include Hard Rock Cafe, Greenhouse, Tavern of the Waterfront... all in the same area so you can walk from one to the next and there are always taxis in front of Greenhouse so you can take a taxi back to the ship. Stick to the area of town thats open, which is waterfront. Some areas of downtown are shady at night, but they are several blocks back from the waterfront.

If you want a nice spot to watch the sunset and have a few drinks try Bluebeards Castle - Banana Tree Grill; if you don't want to sit and have dinner then buy a couple drinks at the bar and sit on their poolside chairs and enjoy the view. Taxis readily available outside the hotel to take you back to the ship when you are ready. The hotel is on a little hill overlooking the Charlotte Amalie Harbor and Havensight. You could also go to Mafolie Hotel Restaurant and have a few drinks at their place - it also looks over Charlotte Amalie.
