Shorts at dinner on the Jewel

It is just my opinion but there is no such thing as dress shorts anymore than a short sleeve dress shirt. Short pants and short sleeves are not dressy.

JMHO

While I don't disagree with your point as far as it goes, do you not acknowledge that some shorts are dressier than others? I don't argue with the policy, so that's not my point. But I think it is safe to say that some shorts are "resort casual" and some are just plain casual and then of course some are sloppy.

Some shorts may be nicer than others but none are dress clothes. Bermuda shorts in Bermuda excepted.

It's like lipstick on a pig. It might be a little prettier but it's still a pig.

The rules say no. So, when you turn up and are turned away, be SURE to tell them that the anonymous folks on Cruise Critic said it was ok. Even if it was only one person out of twenty who said so.

Not wanting to stir the pot on this one, but I'm wondering what the reaction would be to a "Dress Kilt" or "Dress Bermuda Shorts" (which, from what I gather ARE Formal Wear in Bermuda).

Michael

While docked in Bermuda, I believe NCL will honor Dress Bermuda Shorts attire. That, however, means over-the-calf socks and a dress shirt tucked in, jacket and tie. Why bother??

As far as kilts, if the outfit is truly a formal one with long socks and a sporon and a jacket and tie, I would guess (but don't have any real experience) that would be allowed. The same would go for military tropical short uniforms if that was the dress uniform of the day in that locale (ie, not Alaska in June).

In my experience, I have seen men in shorts on the Dawn and the Pearl. At the same time, men in our party on those same ships and the same restaurants were asked to change in to long pants. Perhaps those that get past the gate keeper are beligerant or more forceful. When reminded of the rules, whatever they are, we choose to conform rather than confront.

So I know the official word from NCL is no shorts at dinner...but I've seen conflicting reports on here regarding people wearing dress shorts to dinner. My husband has several pairs of nice dress shorts that he wears with button down collared shirts, and can't believe he can't wear them to dinner. I know you can wear them to the buffet but I'm not crazy about eating dinner at the buffet so wanted to get someone's recent report about how strict they were with the dress code on the Jewel in the dining room/specialty restaurants. Thanks in advance! :D

Please do not wear your shorts in the same dining room as my DW and I, you will feel very embarrassed when I call the head waiter to escort you to the buffet.

I think the rule is in place so men don't wear their bathing suits or other very casual type of shorts. It would be very difficult for NCL to try to differentiate in their rules on what shorts are ok and which are not ok, so they say no shorts. Like I said, my husband has dress shorts that he wears with a button down collared shirt so I can't imagine that anyone would be offended by what he was wearing.

I'm sure you never go over the speed limit either.

I haven't read all the responses yet, but I think you've made a good analogy here - we all know there's a speed limit, and some of us choose to break that rule. When we do, we do it with the understanding that we may be caught and issued a ticket. In the same vein, feel free to go to the dining room in shorts - just be prepared to be turned away - and keep in mind the maitre'd is much less likely to be swayed by tears or exposed cleavage than the average highway patrol officer... :p

My friend wore short to the dining room one night while we were participating in the Mystery Dinner aboard the Jewel. She had on a matching shirt and loose matching shorts that went to her knee. She was approached at the table and told that shorts were not allowed in the dining room. After ordering dinner, she went back to her room to change.
