phcacruiser Posted April 2, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2009 Hi, I've been to Ephesus, Mary's house and St. Johns Basilica. I didn't get a chance to see the Terrace houses. Is it possible to do it on your own or do I need to take an Ephesus tour?
Rare Cruise Junky Posted April 3, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2009 You need to pay to get into Ephesus and then you need Turkish Lira to pay for the terrace houses.
ncstatefan Posted April 3, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2009 Cruise Junky, Were you able to exchange $ for Turkish Lira on the ship or did you convert money before you left home?

I don't know if the ship would have done it, we had a private tour booked and he took care of it for us.
CoralReef Posted April 3, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2009 I didn't ask if the ship had Turkish lira because I'd read that their exchange rates are dreadful. There are ATMs right next to the port where you can easily obtain lira. There are also merchants at the entrance to Ephesus who will exchange euros for lira, although I'm sure they take as much of a cut as the ship. I am big on DIY, but I think that for Ephesus in general, and the Terrace Houses in particular, you will get much more from the experience with a guide. I wasn't able to locate much self-study material on these sites. I understand that there is an audio guide you can rent at Ephesus, but there wasn't one for the Terrace Houses when we were there. Is it possible to do it on your own or do I need to take an Ephesus tour? When we went it seemed that one needed to have a tour guide and frankly the experience without a guide would have been dull and ho hum, our guide made the houses come alive, imagination only goes so far. Book a tour with the terrace houses it was worth it for us and we avoid tours whenever possible.
