bobbymcgee Posted December 1, 2004 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2004 We will be at maui and honolulu. Any close black sand beaches we could get to without a rental car?
Splinter Posted December 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted December 2, 2004 Have only been to black sand beaches on Hawaii (Punalu'u Beach) and from what I know this is the only true black sand beach in the islands. You can drive from either Hilo or Kona in a day trip. Here is some additional information on this: http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/ASK/blacksandbeaches.html
daWoods Posted December 2, 2004 #3 Share Posted December 2, 2004 There are several black sand beaches on Hawaii, even a green one I've heard, but the one I loved the best on the south coast was covered by a new lava flow several years ago. It also covered some ancient lava rock foundations. The one at the end of the road in the north you get to by climbing down a very steep path ( fairly easy) and it's a beautiful area. Climbing up again ( not easy ) isn't nearly as much fun. I believe it's Pololu (sp?) valley it looks into.
spleen93 Posted December 2, 2004 #4 Share Posted December 2, 2004 There is no black sand beach on Oahu. There is a "pseudo" black sand beach on Maui off the road to Hana - check out here: http://www.hawaiiweb.com/maui/beaches/WaianapanapaBlackSandBeach.htm. The only true black sand beaches are on the Big Island. Spleen
