I certainly hope the guide was joking.

 

As a gun owner (of an 870, no less) and trap shooter, you would NOT have time to reload with a slug, 00 buck and bird shot if you were confronted by a bear. So you would have to have all three loaded at the same time. BUT you would have no choice which one you were shooting-however they were loaded is how they would fire. BAD idea.

 

And wrapping bacon around pepper spray. Is the guide an idiot??? Bears have a finely tuned sense of smell. Just carrying the bacon around would make you a target. It was a joke-I wish guides wouldn't joke like that. It makes tourists practice STUPID behaviors.

I read the guide's comments as a joke played on tourists. Outdoorsy people would get a laugh and "city folk" would stay a little closer to the guide! :D
