Norway - things to see outside Oslo

Will be staying overnight in Oslo - leaving ship early and will have an entire day there. Would like to see more than just the city, and get out into the outskirts. Planning to either rent a car by the airport and drive up to Lillehammer or other area and spend the night by the airport, or stay in Oslo and take a train either west or south to see some other areas within a few hours of Oslo. Any suggestions on what we should see besides Oslo?

Norway is a big country, so if you want to go to Lillehammer you should be prepared on 5 hours from Oslo and back again (2.5 hours one way)..

Public transport is expensive (like the rest of Norway..).

Thanks, these look like great places to see! I was also just reading about a place only an hour south of Oslo via boat called Drobak. So I think we'll skip Lillehammer...seems too far for sure! Thanks again!

Skip Drobak (Droebak/DrØbak), and go to Tonsberg (TØnsberg/Toensberg) instead. 1.5 with train each way.

Thanks! can you give me some info on Tonsberg. Is it a prettier town than Drobak? We are not looking for museums and things, just mostly a nice scenic town outide of Oslo. Thanks again for your help.

I would go to Drøbak! It's closer and as nice as Tønsberg!

 

You could also visit Oscarsborg which is very close to Drøbak:
