Thank you for the support. She was talking about the norovirus.

Your post was not noro specific and I was correcting. Thank you for clarifying.

Oh, and my mistake. You are the one that thinks antibacterial wipes work on virus'. My bad.

I concur, I can see how this would come as selfish. That wasn't my intention. I realize everyone is obligated to try and stop the spreading of any disease, but why not cancel the dozens of flights (if not hundreds) of flights out of Mexico City every day? I'd be pissed and disappointed if any of my ports were canceled (8 months of planning to be ruined by leaving a week and half too late is a bummer), but I'd at least try and understand the reason for it. If they start cancelling flights out of Mexico City and can half a** justify it I'll buy into skipping Mexico ports...or at least try.

Fortunately the airlines have started allowing people to cancel flights to MX at no charge. The CDC has recommended cancelling non-essential travel to MX. Some would disagree, but a cruise stop does not seem to be essential. If somebody could figure out how to limit tourist travel by air to MX, I'd hope they consider it.

You know the cruise line would just love the revenue it will generate with those sea days! That's what frustrates the heck out of me as well.

See I question this. Would Carnival make more revenue on sea days? I think no. Yes, they would make more on alcohol and casino. BUT they lose money on excursions and food expenses go up. When people go out on port, there are not as many eating on the ship during the day. So do they come out even you think? Or which would they make more from?

People still eat breakfast and dinner on the ship in port.

The excursions would be a hit, but beside the casino and bars, there are also the shops, bingo, and everyone's favorite, art auctions.

It would be interesting to see a cost break down, not only would they be using more food, but their big expense would be the fuel for 2 (or however many) extra sea days. I think they would come out behind judging by the high price I just saw on the cruise to nowhere sailings on Carnival.

The biggest farce at sea= Art Auctions!!

Worry about 152 flu deaths, most of them previously healthy male adults, 20 - 44. This isn't pesky and it's not the kinds of flu deaths we see in North America, where it typically is fatal only in vulnerable groups. I agree with other posters that the media is leaping on board to crank up the ratings machine, but the demographics of this are just weird. Why healthy young men?

The cruise lines are having to make very tough decisions; I would still rather be on a cruise to nowhere choosing my umpteenth treat (sigh!) than here at work! This is your vacation, folks...go with the flow.

I am not a health care expert, but I do think this needs to be said. In the areas where deaths have occurred, the conditions are very different than other countries where this has spread. For example.... you know the expression "Don't Drink the water"? Well that only applies to Mexico, and not even the resorts.... Washing your hands with untreated water is not a BIG help.

I do realize that the water is treated a bit, but nothing like what we do in the USA.

I think that people don't want to talk about this, as they are worried about racial stereotypes. I don't mean anything like that at all. I just think that if the water can spread Montezuma's revenge.... it could also be spreading the flu.

It would explain why cases in central Mexico would be deadly.

This thread is getting so long I can't keep up.

Does anyone know if there is a list of which ships have already missed ports in Mexico?

I did read that the Holiday didn't go into Cozumel & spent it at sea. Any others? Thanks!

Don't leave out fuel, that's a very big expense, possibly their largest

Just chatting with Laura -- Carnival Splendor is at sea again today and is scheduled to make its first call in Mexico tomorrow. However, as we have reported in our latest item, Carnival is planning to release information on itinerary changes today at 5 p.m. Until then, Laura and her fellow cruise passengers don't know if they are en route to anywhere! (The entire Mexican Riviera itinerary is made up of Mexico ports of call.)

Guest relations did follow up with her, after providing a very noninformed answer yesterday when she stopped by the desk. She says the gentleman who called back had little more to say, though; he stressed that the cruise line does not want to alarm passengers, and that the flu is not present in the ports the ship visits...

This is the only one I've seen so far:

-- Carnival Inspiration's call in Cozumel

-- Holiday's call in Cozumel

-- Carnival Elation's call in Ensenada.

Hope that helps some

Again, none of these illnesses are a joke. They happen.

I was hospitalized for days in 2003 with West Nile. My husband and I were actually having discussions about "getting things in order." I was that sick.

Just because you have never been touched personally by these diseases, does not mean that they do not happen.

I'm just lucky to have survived with no lasting problems. Please do not use these as proof that there is no reason for any concern with the current health alerts.

NO ONE IS SAYING THEY DON'T HAPPEN.

I am very sorry for what you went through. However the media (and government) hyped these things like it was going to be the end of the world.

More than 3,000 people a year die of the flu....A tragedy for sure, BUT not a reason to broadcast every case all day long on CNN.

For the most part, cruise lines have become very good at preventing the spread of viruses.
