Swine flu updates from Cruise Critic

Recommended Posts

I don't know about you guys, but I just want a week away. Even if that means spending a week on a luxury floating hotel in the Chesapeake Bay.

Sure... I would be a little disappointed to miss some of the stops, but I would say that coming home with good health and a week of R&R would be my priority.

Now if there was a passenger aboard with the Swine, then I would probably be part of the group that would toss the person overboard.

Everyone needs to calm down! What happens, happens. There's virtually nothing that you or I can do about it. If you are that worried, then cancel your trip, lock your doors and head for the bunker!

I agree 100%. We are due to sail on the Splendor on Sunday and the only worry I have is will they cancel the cruise! If the ship sails, we are on it - even if the only port we see is Los Angeles!!

That's a great attitude -- I could sure use a trip away! Have a fabulous time :D

Melissa, you are doing an excellent job of keeping us informed and we truly appreciate it!

My cruise on the Glory Saturday has two scheduled ports of call to Mexico, but as another one traveling in our group has noted, we don't care where they take us as long as we are on that ship and we intend to have fun!!

If that were the case.......I would hope for cancellation and book another cruise.....

Dh is like that, he wants to go even if it's strictly sea days. I on the other hand am dreading the thought of 5 solid sea days. It just doesn't appeal that much to me to be on board. Don't get me wrong I love being a cruise but part of that is seeing the ports I love. Just sitting on my butt around the pool or in the casino (alhtough I love casinos) and eating, doesn't interest me, not for 5 straight days.

Guess if I liked to drink and party I could make it work though LOL

I just called Carnival's 800# to see the status of my cruise on the 17th. They have a recording stating that by 5pm EST today you can check their website for an update on all itneraries to Mexico.

Just an update. I hope we will NOT be stopping in Cozumel!:p

I would take that as well. But, I really want to get away now :) I wonder if they would have an Eastern Carribean cruise leaving Sunday we could still get on and just have to change our flight?

On a side note the doctor that I work for told me to take the normal precautions that you should take during flu season (wash your hands with soap and water). He said he doesn't think there is a lot to worry about if you have a good immune system. He also thinks that the media is making it much bigger and worse that it really is.

I just want to be able to change my ship at no charge. Right now we are doing Cozumel in between 2 sea days. If they cancel that port, the Liberty would have over 3 straight sea days... which is too long for me.... If this thing gets worse and escalates, I hope Carnival will let us change at no charge...

See the main sticky thread. Cozumel was skipped today.

There will be a announcement at 5 pm by Carnival.

I really dont get why there has to be 10 more theads about this when if someone has a comment they can discuss it on the sticky thread :(

The mods are getting worn out trying to combine theads, they keep springing up like weeds.

I have been reading the main sticky thread, as a matter of fact, I even posted on it... This post is different... its not about not visiting Mexico, its not about waiting for announcements to be made etc... Its about allowing us to cancel or change our plans without penalty.

Maybe it doesn't affect you, but it does affect me and thousands of other passengers...

If you are getting tired of these threads, please just skip it, no reason to be nasty about it..but thanks for your comments anyway...

I cant imagine Carnival would want to encourage people to dump/switch their cruises without penalty, especially a cruise a month from now. They still have to fill the ships.

Maybe you will luck out and they will post a schedule change and then you can cancel without penalty.

We don't cruise the Splendor until November and hope things will have settled down by then - but either way, my husband feels the same way - a cruise to nowhere is just fine by us as long as they take us down to the nice warm sun! He said "I'm not going on this trip for the ports, I'm going so that I can be a complete vegetable for a week!":D

I dont think Im being nasty.

btw in one of the myriad of threads posted today, Carnival's policy is posted. IF Carnival changes the port, you have 24 hours to change or cancel WITHOUT PENALTY. So, if they announce at 5 pm today that you will not be going to Cozumel you can cancel or change within 24 hours of the announcement.

that to me is the problem with all these threads, the information is getting lost. You can cancel, but not until the announcement which will probably be a 5 pm for the close in cruises.

I posted this on another thread but I'll post again for those that didnt' see it. Someone posted it early for me and it answered my question.

Port Cancellation Policy

If Carnival Cruise Lines ("Carnival") has adequate notice prior to sailing that a vessel will deviate from the published itinerary, it will promptly -- upon making the itinerary change -- notify guests of the change through their travel agents or directly, in the case of a direct booking ("the Notice"). The Notice shall offer guests an opportunity to cancel their booking without penalty within 24 hours of the delivery of the Notice. Carnival shall not be liable to guests for any charges, fees or expenses paid or owed to third parties (such as air travel booked by a guest directly with an airline) in connection with a cancelled booking or substituted port. In the event a guest does not cancel his or her cruise on a timely basis, no additional compensation for the itinerary change will be offered to the guest at a later time.

In the event the itinerary change becomes necessary while the ship is at sea or when notice prior to sailing is not feasible, Carnival shall attempt to substitute an alternative port. Carnival shall promptly provide written notice of the itinerary change to the guests as well as announcing the change in the Carnival Capers and via the public address system. No compensation shall be provided to guests when an alternative port is offered.

If safety, scheduling or other concerns prevent the ship from calling on an alternative port, Carnival shall promptly provide written notice of the elimination of the scheduled port to the guests as well as announcing the change in the Carnival Capers and via the public address system. The written notice shall also offer a shipboard credit of $20.00 (U.S.D.) per person to be reflected on the sail and sign account.

Nothing herein shall affect the guest's ability to exercise the Vacation Guarantee on sailings where it applies.

So if they announcment tonight affects your cruise, you will have 24 hours to make a change penalty free.

Hopefully by your cruise this will blow over. Right now they are trying to keep it contained. I know here in Ohio a little boy has it from traveling to Mexico. Just like hurricanes, I think they will play this day by day.
