What do you recommend doing in St. Thomas?

We are taking a cruise in January with several of our friends and their kids (40 total going). Some of us are debating what to do, go to Sapphire beach or Magens bay? Which has more things to do? I did read that post that is out there about this and it does sound like there is more to do at Sapphire, but are there shops or bars or anything else around?

If you recommend doing something different I would be open to hearing that also.

Both beaches have a beach bar and grill. Sapphire has a poolside grill as well as the beachfront one. Neither has large shops but they both have a small gift shop.
