Nutbunch Posted May 8, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 8, 2009 In the cruiselines general items of documentation, they say that a passport should be good for at least six months after the last day of the cruise. Our kids passports are only good for 5 years and they expire in October, but we are booked on an Alaskan cruise in July. They say it is because some counties laws require this. Is Canada one of them? We do stop in Victoria. I fear it's to late to renew theirs (they still look similar to the pictures). The US seems to take 6 weeks at a minimum. c-cruise Posted May 9, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2009 Check this site for info on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Click on the special groups link. http://www.getyouhome.gov/ If your kids are under 16 or you are on a round trip cruise out of a US port they technically can still get by with a birth certificate even after the WHTI takes effect (unless you are flying internationally). Not that renewing the passports wouldn't be the best option ;) Be sure to check with the cruise line though as they may still require a passport. cherylandtk Posted May 9, 2009 #3 Share Posted May 9, 2009 Canada does not impose a 6 month expiry limit on US passports.
CeleBrat Posted May 9, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 9, 2009 We only had to show our passports for CANADA on our Alaskan cruise when we physically drove over the border in a car (heading in-land from the port of Skagway). They were very strict. When disembarking the ship and entering CANADA, it was just like the Caribbean, where you could walk off the ship and no one checked anything.
