Krazy Kruizers Posted December 8, 2004 #3 Share Posted December 8, 2004 Also remember that even though some high schools don't have long spring breaks, parents will still take their children out of school - especially at Easter. And many of them don't worry about their children missing school or making up the work.
Arubalisa Posted December 8, 2004 #4 Share Posted December 8, 2004 Also remember that even though some high schools don't have long spring breaks, parents will still take their children out of school - especially at Easter. And many of them don't worry about their children missing school or making up the work. Not quite so easy anymore...School systems nowadays have firm absence policies. Excused (illness- requires a drs. note, death in family, religious holiday) and unexcused absences are closely watched. Some districts use discretionary powers to excuse students based upon circumstance. Many districts however do not take to kindly to parents removing their children from school for "vacations" (they just don't believe in real life cultural experience counts anymore :( ). Excessive absences whether excused or unexcused, do bring on investigation by school administrators or social workers. Some just skip that and call ther Division of Children & Family Services. School administrators with a couple of thousand kids do not always have the facts as to where these children are. Are they not in school because Mom came home at 6 a.m. in a drunken stupor incapable of getting the kids off to school  OR are they with their family galavanting around Europe or the Caribbean :D ... Last, if schools allow students to make up work for unexcused absences it us usually within a short time frame, like 3 days. Other schools, for unexcused absences, simply give students a zero grade for work missed during that period. Then there is elegibility for school credit in order to graduate...based upon attendance. ekerr19 Posted December 8, 2004 #5 Share Posted December 8, 2004 Sorry, but you can put me in the category as one person who doesn't mind if their children miss a couple days of school for a vacation. Also, please keep in mind that many people may have situations other public school, where a children missing school for a vacation with family is not considered a crime. In my opinion, it is no one's business if we are "galavanting" around anywhere. Perhaps this is why I have such an issue with public school systems. Our children and their teachers have EXTREMELY advanced notice when we are to be gone and their teachers are fantastic about making sure they have all their assignments (either to do in advance or take with them). We make our children set aside a certain amount of time per day for their studies. We have travleled extensively with our children - we also try and take the time to make each vacation a learning experience in itself. Learning isn't always taught in the classroom.
