How are things with the smoking situation now ? Haven't been on a cruise ship since last year, but they seem to be restricting it more and more. Has anybody had cause to be disappointed or inconvenienced because they ban is not so stringent as it is on land ?

I believe most UK registered ships are following the UK laws from End of Summer. i.e. not smoking anywhere indoors, only on open decks in designated areas or Balconies!

I believe P&O is losing custom in droves as it is not only the smoker 23% of the population but their partners and travelling companions who are also 'jumping ship'. It has been reported that NCL has already back tracked on its no smoking policy.

Princess seem to have got it right providing facilities for both the smoker and non smoker.

So how exactly do the cruise lines please smokers and non-smokers? For me, I would be happy with all inside areas smoke free. Bring in the smokers and I go outside! On my last cruise the British smokers must have thought they were in heaven as smoking was allowed in the casino and in several indoor lounges - it was vile. :(

Thinking back to our first cruise in 1996 when smoking was allowed even in the restaurants, conditions have improved dramatically for the non smoker and rightly so. Perhaps a specific smoking lounge as per the cigar bars on Princess would be helpful and hopefully not too many non smokers would complain that it was a facility they were unable to enjoy;)

I am a smoker and I am pleased indoor smoking is banned. But I think a covered area should be provided for inclement weather.
