? about Bayonne & bag check in (PM hours)

question for those pioneers going out of Bayonne to Canada (sails @ 10PM) this month: Please look around & tell me if I can drive up & check my bags EARLY (how early?), then go return my rental car at the Newark Airport & get transportation (either taxi or public) back to the port. I know at Port Canaveral I can do this but procedures are more established there & I don't know how early the porters will be taking bags or when the terinal actually opens for embarking passengers. It doesn't help that I won't have luggage tags until I get there (along with everyone else, filling them out on the spot--should I bring name/address labels to stick on?)
I understand Newark airport is only ____ minutes away (15?). Any tolls?
