Tipping when you first meet your room steward?

Welllll.. I am willing to bet the nice tip of a gift up front was the ONLY reason I received 30 past guest pins(also an additional $10.00 each of the 3 days he/she left the puns)~~!!~~

Cruise passengers are not the crew members employers;) I'd be willing to bet that the cruiselines offer incentives/bribes to their employee's all the time..........

Depending on he market, I have seen some of the same pins going for over &50.00 each. Times 30, I think it might be around & 1,500.00.... Paid for the cruise....

 

Sell them on E-Bay...need you ask such a stupid question, when the obvious is sooo obvious????????

I usually asked them at which port they are planning to get off the ship, then the night before that port I will leave envelopes with their names on them and $20 each.

 

The bar waiters/waitresses I tip a dollar a drink as they serve me.

 

The bar tenders if they've waited on me several times I tip one or two days in then again at the end especially at the casino bar where I spend most of my time and always if I've won very much.

We've never had bad service, and we give them extra at the end.:)

They are always very friendly, and on the ball!!:D

When we first arrive on ship and make it to our cabin to unpack, if the steward comes in, helps in moving bags around, explains anything having to do with the ship or its schedule, asks if we want ice, more/less chairs or anything else, we tip $20. If he doesn't show up and help us get accommodated, he gets nothing. Stewards who are available to greet you when you first arrive on board are usually the ones that go above and beyond for you anyway. And I appreciate the attentiveness and reward it. But, having been in customer service in one form or another for 30 years, I am a generous tipper when I think people are doing more than required. I also freely use the comment cards to show my appreciation or dissatisfaction as I assume the management, like many other places I have worked, often reads these in staff meetings.

That is SOOOO cute! What a great idea!!

 

We stole an idea here from CC. We would wrap up a mini candy bar with a dollar every night, sometimes $2. Our last night, we wrapped two candy bars, each with $3, plus DH gave our steward $10. He was amazing. We never had to ask for anything, other than day 1 to empty the mini bar for our soda & water. He kept our ice bucket filled, gave us clean towels continuously (even when we didn't put them on the floor), was friendly & gracious each & every time we saw him, etc etc etc.

Well i cant take the credit either!!!.....i took this idea from Cruise Critic too!!! Thats why we're here right? lol :D:cool:;):p

The people saying it's a bribe should also remember that most stewards are Filipino, in the Philippines what we would consider a 'bribe' is just how they do business. A good will gift if you will.

 

Heck, even in American culture...look at the some of the classic Black and White movies or "rat pack" type movies from the 60's.

 

A guy walks into a bar...orders a drink. TIPS UP FRONT, with the comment "Keep them coming". Same common behavior for a concierge at a hotel.

A guy will say, "I want this..this..and this..and hands the person a 'tip/bribe'" followed by a hardy "Yes Sir".

 

Even scrooge tossed the waife an extra bit..before he received his Christmas Goose. (with the offer to double it on receipt..old habits die hard)

I can understand your analogy here in the USA but on a ship?

 

You say the crew is fillipino yet where they come from,the minimum hourly wage for an eight hour day is 85 cents an hour.So you would go to a hotel and tip the concierge 3 days pay? The extra $20 everyone seems to tip is 3 days pay. Lets look at the tipping amounts for a steward. $3.50 per person.So a cabin of 2 people is equal to a days pay where they come from.They get 10+ cabins so everyday they are making 10x what they would make in their home country.

Lets not forget room and board is included in contract! When that is factored in they are very well rewarded. No wonder so many sign contracts over and over.

I don't pay bribes up-front on a cruise ship. I tip extra at the end of the cruise for excellant/extra services rendered.
