Last time I took a cruise was in 1997 and I'm sure there have been quite some changes since then...

 

I have made a tentative reservation for an obstructed oceanview on Diamond Princess from Whittier to Vancouver and the TA talked me into booking a HH guaranteed rather than booking a specific unit. According to him, the chance to get an upgrade would be better this way. Not sure if this is true?

We booked an HH guaranteed on the Sapphire this summer and we ended up in FF, E309. Our cruise is Aug. 1 -- I think I read that some people may end up with a couple of cabin changes before the cruise?

What the OP said is true, but someone gets the HH and it could be you. There is no such thing as a guaranteed upgrade, so choose what would make you happy.
