Look2Sea Posted June 5, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2009 Any thoughts on best time to take 3 hour round trip White Pass Train. 815am 1245pm 430pm Wondering if there are general weather trends associated with time of day? Do you need to book train ahead of time? I have heard that it is best to wait till you get to Skagway, so you will know weather conditions? But is train likely to sell out? It seems that it would be hectic to do 815am train unless you booked with ship. Ship gets into port at 7am. Does anyone know cut off time to purchase ship excursions while onboard. Wondering if 430pm train (ship excursion) can be purchased on same day. For instance, signing up for 430pm train excursion at 2pm same day (providing space is available).
Grannycb Posted June 5, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2009 No best time - it depends on the weather of the day. I asked if the train ever sells out at the RR office. Their answer was that it hasn't so far. We took the early train and didn't find it was a rush to get tickets and board the train in town.
SC-Cruiser Posted June 6, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2009 We did the 12:45pm but your mileage may vary. We wanted to sleep in, gets some breakfast and then head out. If you book through the ship, the boarding is right next to the ship so 8:15am is no problem (if you're an early riser). If you book directly with the train, it is about a 5 minute walk to the train depot (no loading at dock side if you book direct). You can buy tickets up to about 15-30 minutes before the train leaves. I booked ahead because we were planning to go regardless of weather but I can see the logic in waiting until you get there to see what the weather is like.
