Juneau Alaska walking tour for next to nothing.



First Stop

USS Juneau Memorial next to cruise ship terminal.

The USS Juneau was hit by two Japanese long lance torpedoes on Friday on 11/13/42, one at 2:00 AM and a second one 10 hours later, completely destroying the ship. The 150 survivors out of a crew of 700 were left for eight days in shark infested waters. In the end, all but 10 of her crew were lost, including the five Sullivan Brothers. Does Juneau,

The City and Borough of Juneau dedicated a memorial plaque to the USS Juneau on July 5, 1987. It is located on the cruise ship dock in downtown Juneau.

 

Second Stop

The Alaska State Museum 15-minute walk from Cruise ship Dock/ USS Juneau Memorial

This is one of the coolest Museums in the State.

Third Stop

The Federal Building 10-minute walk from Alaska State Museum, houses the bureau of Indian affairs and has on exhibit native crafts. Juneau’s State Office Building is a multi-story complex housing many state offices. The eighth floor has a plaza opening onto an outdoor balcony offering a beautiful view of the area. Also on the eighth floor, there is a fully restored 1928 Kimball organ.

Fourth Stop

Juneau-Douglas City Museum

This museum is 15-minutes walking distance from The Federal Building.

Hours M - F, 9 am to 5 pm. Sat & Sun 10 am to 5 pm

Fifth Stop

The Alaska State Capitol building is 5-minute walk from Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

The State Capital houses the Governor’s office and legislative offices. Four giant pillars at the front of the building are made from Alaskan marble. Free tours are given of the capitol building during the summer.
