Cadillac Mountain - Bar Harbor

I read a post that said you have to take a private tour to go to Cadillac Mountain, that the trolley/bus does not go there. Does the tour have to be through the cruise line, or does the island have any tours?

To clarify, what does not go up Cadillac Mountain is the Island Explorer, the free bus for Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park.

Independent tours offered by -

http://www.acadiaislandtours.com/

http://www.acadiatours.com/

include stops at the top of Cadillac Mountain. Oli's Trolley (acadiaislandtours) has the trolley; Acadia National Park Tours (acadiatours) has what I would call converted school buses.

They must have stopped going there this year because we took the Island Explorer up Cadillac MT in Sept 08 and from there to Jordans Pond.

In the all the years I've been going to Bar Harbor, the Island Explorer never has included the top of Cadillac Mountain as one of the schedule stops; and again this year it is not listed as a schedule stop.

It must be the September Special .

TMJBR asked:

.....What is the closest the free bus gets?...

answer: The Island Explorer route # 4 (Loop Road) bus makes a scheduled stop at the trail head for the Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail.

....Can you hike up the remainder?.......

answer: I would not but if you are an avid hiker, go for it! The North Ridge Trail is the easiest of the 4 trails to the summit.

If you have never been to Bar Harbor Maine, going to the top of Cadallic Mountain is a MUST. The view from up there is absolutely BE-U-Ti-FULL! Undescribable. You can see all kinds of surrounding islands. The top is pretty flat and there is a wonderful walking trail all around it. Lots of boulders to sit and have your photo taken on , etc. There is a gift shop at the top where you can get a cold drink, ice cream and souviners.

If can find time, eat lunch or a snack at Geddy's Resturant right downtown. (Pronouced Jetty's) The decor is really neat. They have licence plates from many states from visitors and lots of other interesting parafanalia (sp?) on the walls and ceilings. They will take your photo and put it up on their website and there is a nice giftshop downstairs. Don't miss it!

One day is NOT enough to see the island. I have so many favorite areas that I regularly visit when on the island, and lots of hiking trails, that are easy (not the mountains), with beautiful views. Sea Wall is a beautiful area on the 'quiet side' of the island and we always go to Bass Harbor Head lighthouse and go down the little trail beyond the keepers house and down the wooden steps out onto the boulders below the lighthouse. Great place to be at sunset!!!

I love the island so much, that I'd love to be down there offering private tours of the island.

Anybody going to Sand Beach in the Park should know there is no food service there or chair rentals that I'm aware of. Just bring your towel to lie on. Also be aware that Maine coastal waters are COLD, as in you can almost see ice cube floating in it. It never warms up. While at the beach we like to walk over to the left or right of the beach and explore the boulders along the way. Gets you away from the crowds a bit and it's picture-worthy. Oh, and don't trhow food to the seagulls on the beach. You can be fined by park authorities, I know first hand. LOL
