Back to Back sailings with change of cabin grade

My partner and I are booked on the QM2 17 Nov Caribbean cruise out of NY in a Grill grade stateroom. I'm seriously considering taking the preceding westbound TA from Southampton in a Britannia grade stateroom by myself. The question is do I have to get off the ship in NY and check back again or can I just change cabins and stay on the ship?

On a recent b/b Mexico cruise we received a letter in our cabin instructing us to disembark the ship after the first segment and go through customs, then reboard the ship if we wished in an hour or so, which is what we did. It is our understanding that the process is up to the Captain, but going through customs makes sense if you've been in a another country outside of the U.S. Best consult the cruise line for the answer for your particular situation.
